Who is Robert Jordan?

Robert Jordan was the pen name of James Oliver Rigney Jr., an American author of epic fantasy. He is best known for his series The Wheel of Time, which comprises 14 books and a prequel novel. He is also one of several writers to have written original Conan the Barbarian novels, and he published historical fiction using the pseudonym Reagan O'Neal, a western as Jackson O'Reilly, and dance criticism as Chang Lung.

Jordan was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on October 17, 1948. He served two tours in Vietnam (1968 to 1970) with the United States Army as a helicopter gunner. After graduating from The Citadel with a degree in physics, he was employed by the United States Navy as a nuclear engineer. He began writing in 1977.

In 1990, Jordan published The Eye of the World, the first book in his Wheel of Time series. The series was a critical and commercial success, and Jordan became one of the most popular fantasy authors in the world. He published 13 more books in the series before he died in 2007. The final book in the series, A Memory of Light, was completed by Brandon Sanderson based on Jordan's notes. He passed away on September 16, 2007, at 58, from complications of cardiac amyloidosis.
