For any other actor, playing the role of Indiana Jones would have been an achievement of a lifetime, but Harrison Ford has had a lot more over his illustrious career, including his long, multi-episode journey as Han Solo from Star Wars. Yet, Indiana Jones remains a character that will always be associated with the veteran actor, who is currently a part of Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone universe.

Harrison Ford has played Indiana Jones for over 40 years and in five films. However, it seems that our galaxy-trodding captain of the Millennium Falcon is ready to give up his adventures as the fedora-wearing adventurer after his latest round in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which premiered at Cannes 2023.

Currently 80 years old, Harrison Ford has announced that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was the last time he dressed up as perhaps the most iconic adventurer in the history of Hollywood. When asked about the reason, the actor pointed to his age and the creation it has when the role is this demanding. He said at the Cannes Film Festival press conference:

"Is it not evident?...I need to sit down and rest a little bit. I love to work. And I love this character. And I love what it brought into my life. That's all I can say."

"You've given my life purpose and meaning, and I'm grateful for that": Harrison Ford presents his film at Cannes 2023

It is always a tearful goodbye when someone has been attached to a character for this long. Harrison Ford has been the only Indiana Jones so far, which may not be the case in the world of franchises after his announcement.

The actor addressed the film with a lot of emotion both at the press conference and the film's presentation. Before Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was screened in the theatre, Ford was awarded an honorary Palme d'Or for his achievements. The emotional Ford said:

"I'm very touched. I'm very moved by this. They say when you're about to die you see your life flash before your eyes, and I just saw my life flash before my eyes. A great part of my life, but not all of my life...My life has been enabled by my lovely wife [Calista Flockhart], who has supported my passions and my dreams. I'm grateful. Thank you. And, you know, I love you, [the audience], too. Thank you. You've given my life purpose and meaning, and I'm grateful for that."

Director James Mangold’s new Indiana Jones follows Harrison Ford's globe-trotting archeologist with his goddaughter (played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge) in a race-against-time scenario.

The actor spoke in the press conference about the experience of being Indiana Jones for one last time, saying:

"It’s indescribable. I felt… I can’t even tell you,...It’s just extraordinary to see a relic of your life as it passes by. With the warmth of this place and sense of community, the welcome is unimaginable. It makes me feel good."

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny also stars Antonio Banderas, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen, among others.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is set to release worldwide on June 30, 2023.
