Who is Kiriko Kamori?

Kiriko Kamori, better known as Kiriko, is a character in the Blizzard Entertainment game Overwatch 2 and was officially revealed at the 2022 Tokyo Game Show, on the 15th of September. Kiriko is a ninja healer who is helped by her kitsune spirit and is considered to be a support hero in the game. She is said to have a cheeky personality and is not afraid to tease anyone, including her enemies, regardless of how intimidating they can be.

Despite that, she is known as the Protector of Kanezaka as the Yamagami family did the same, although they followed a more traditional path. But Kiriko decided to merge the past and the present, which is witnessed by the fact that she’s a hybrid healer and warrior.

Life in Kanezaka

Born in Kanezaka, Kiriko was raised by both her grandmother and her mother. Her family has lived and watched over Kanezaka for generations and they also own a shop in the city, Yamagami Blades, which was considered the best place to buy swords, blades and other weapons in the region. Her father was also a skilled fighter and weapons creator while her mother, Asa Yamagami, is exceptionally skilled with the sword, and was recruited by the Shimada clan to train the successors of the family.

Her grandmother, on the other hand, tended to the Fox Shrine and taught Kiriko how to do the same while also explaining the importance of community and traditions. Both women’s beliefs strongly shaped her during her formative years and her fighting style, as her grandmother taught her how to heal people and summon the Fox Spirit.

Her mother was also a fully-fledged ninja and taught Kiriko alongside Hanzo and Genji to stand up for themselves and fight whenever needed. In the end, both women wanted her to follow their paths but Kiriko, unable to choose, decided to follow both paths as she became a hybrid healer and warrior. During this time, she was also a frequent visitor to Shimada Castle and was considered to be a niece-like figure to both Genji and Hanzo Shimada.

However, she was very close to Genji as they were both just as mischievous as the other, which later earned Kiriko her title of a trickster.

At the tender age of 7, Kiriko bore witness to the fall of the Shimada clan and later, the assassination of Sojiro Shimada, Genji and Hanzo’s father. This left a power vacuum in the town which the Hashimoto clan took advantage of and took over Shimada’s turf. However, they weren’t like the Shimada clan and instead terrorized the town, even taking Kiriko’s father hostage and forcing him to make blades for them. They did allow the family to visit him on occasions and he was able to send Kiriko a blade as a gift a few years later.

However, with the town completely under their control, the family had to shutter Yamagami Blades and move to the upper level, although Kiriko eventually moved in with her grandmother for her own safety a year later. The Hashimoto clan continued their reign for more than a decade although Kiriko eventually returned to the town at the age of 20 and became the caretaker of the Tetsuzan Shrine.

But because she loathed the Hashimoto clan, she decided to strike back in an attempt to end their reign of terror and joined up with a group of teenagers; Ryota, Nobuto and Sakura. Together, the quartet decided to defeat the Hashimoto clan during the End of Summer Festival. While they managed to subdue and incapacitate the guards, they were forced to make a decision when the team found a shipment of arms.

Ryota wanted to destroy them using fireworks while Kiriko wanted to push them into the water, although she later got all three teenagers on her side by reciting a story that Sojiro Shimada had told her. She convinced the group that their actions against the Hashimoto clan would show the rest of the world exactly who they are and that they shouldn’t let violence define them. Kiriko’s speech changed their minds and at the same time, they formed Yokai with the goal to free Kanezka from Hashimoto and to strike fear into the clan’s heart.

Kiriko is a young woman, but while her hair is depicted as green in-game, her natural hair-color in the trailer appears to be black. Her clothing design is based on a shrine maiden from Shinoto with a red hakama, a white kosode and a large rope-like belt around her waist. She also wears red half-gloves on both hands, ankle length sneakers, red thigh-high leggings and a belt for her kunai on her thigh. Her headband also has a highly stylized symbol for kitsune, which means fox.
