Nusret Gökçe, popularly known as Salt Bae, was born into a Kurdish family. He left school in the sixth grade due to family finance issues and started to work as a butcher's apprentice in the Kadikoy district of Istanbul.

In 2021, he became the owner of Nusr-Et, a chain of luxury steak restaurants. He has branches in Turkey, Greece, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. His restaurant name comes from his own name "Nusr" and "Et" which means meat in Turkish.

Nusret Gökçe, most famous by his nickname Salt Bae, is a Turkish butcher, chef, food entertainer, and restaurateur. He was originally born in Erzurum, to his father Faik, a mineworker, and his mother Fatma. He started working as an apprentice butcher in Kadikoy at the age of 11 because of his family's financial difficulties.

In his 20s, Gökçe went to Buenos Aires to learn more about their beef and the art of butchering. As he learned more about steak, his dream of opening a restaurant grew stronger and that's exactly what he did.

Gökçe traveled to a number of countries including Argentina and the United States. He worked in local restaurants for free between 2007 and 2010, to gain experience as a chef and restaurant owner. After returning to Turkey, Gökçe opened his first restaurant in Istanbul in 2010, and subsequently a restaurant in Dubai in 2014. He currently owns 40 restaurants around the world.

Nusret Gökçe is the man behind the viral meme that exploded on the internet at the beginning of 2017. The video of his romantic preparation of an Ottoman steak, published on January 7, 2017, quickly became viral and before he realized it, his face was a meme that was shared on a global scale.

The strangely sensual meat videos of Nusret Gökçe rapidly became a series of viral memes with viewers, particularly enjoying the flamboyant manner Nusret dusted a handful of salt crystals at the end of the video. From then on he was called Salt Bae.

Nusret quickly turned into a full-fledged celebrity, cooking for celebrities like David Beckham, Leonardo DiCaprio, and DJ Khaled. Today Salt Bae’s Instagram page boasts more than 50 million followers.
