Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 film The Outsiders has certainly aged like fine wine as cinephiles all agree that it is one of the book-to-film adaptations ever made. It had an enormous cast of rookie actors who went on to build illustrious careers of their own. Reportedly, a librarian at Lone Star Elementary School in Fresno named Jo Ellen Misakian and her students were the people who inspired the director to make the film.
The Outsiders kickstarted the careers of several prominent actors. Some of them went on to become household names, while some, unfortunately, faded into obscurity. The film earned $33.7 million on a $10 million budget and is often considered a cult classic.
The Outsiders cast age and whereabouts explored
1) Tom Cruise as Steve Randle - Age 60
Tom Cruise's Steve Randle was a young Greaser oozing with confidence. Even though he was not under the spotlight for most of the film, his career seemed to have taken off after this film.
Cruise is currently one of the world's highest-paid actors. He has received several honors like, an Honorary Palme d'Or, three Golden Globe Awards, and even four Academy Award nominations.
His films have grossed over $11.5 billion worldwide which had made him one of the highest-grossing box-office stars of all time. Some of his most popular films are Top Gun, The Color of Money, Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and The Mission Impossible series, etc.
2) Rob Lowe as Sodapop "Soda" Curtis - Age 59
Sometimes he is the rugged Eddie F*cking Nero from Californication, other times he is the anxious yet wholesome Chris Traeger from Parks and Recreation. However, mostly he is the iconic Rob Lowe. Like Cruise, Lowe too was more of a supporting character in The Outsiders but like Cruise, he also went on to become one of showbiz's biggest names.
Rob Lowe has received Primetime Emmy Award nominations and even two Golden Globe Awards. Some of his other well-known projects include Brothers & Sisters, 9-1-1: Lone Star, The West Wing, The Hotel New Hampshire, 9-1-1: Lone Star, and Code Black, etc. He has even directed a TV film named The Bad Seed.
3) Ralph Macchio as Johnny Cade - Age 61
He is the Karate Kid, Daniel LaRusso from the Karate Kid film series, which defined an entire generation. A lot of the credit for this goes to Macchio's LaRusso and Pat Morita's Mr. Miyagi.
What happened to his character in The Outsiders was tragic but the same can not be said about his career. He is also known for his roles in Eight Is Enough, My Cousin Vinny, Crossroads, Ugly Betty, and The Deuce.
In recent years he and his The Karate Kid co-star William Zabka starred in a spinoff series titled Cobra Kai. The show's sixth and final season is currently in development.
Francis Ford Coppola's film also had other names starring in it like C. Thomas Howell, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, and Matt Dillon. It is also worth noting that while most of the cast of the film is still alive and in their late-50s to mid-60s, actor Patrick Swayze passed away in September 2009.
