Police reported that he was descending the snowmobile on a steep grade when the vehicle rolled over and landed on him. Block was driving in a group, but he was alone when the crash occurred. Block's wealth was largely due to his racing career and the two companies of which he was co-owner, DC Shoes, and the automobile clothing brand Hoonigan Industries. He and his business partner Damon Way made $1.5 million in their first year following the establishment of the business with a loan of $10,000 from Block's parents and both sold their DC shoes to Quicksilver for $87 million dollars in 2004.

After selling, Block remained at DC Shoes as a leader in the brand's vision and he was also "Head Hoonigan in Charge" for Hoonigan Industries until he died. The company was a manufacturer of clothing and other clothing for gas heaters and also ran the Block racing team in partnership with Ford until 2021.

In his long career, he has competed in all rally seasons from his debut in 2005 to 2015, winning 15 Rally America races and six Global RallyCross races. Spin-off Hoonigan Media Machine made video content for fans, including popular Gymkhana files, which brought more sponsors to his racing career.
