Former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, 56, unexpectedly passed away from lung cancer on August 9, 2024. The news comes almost six months after her son Marco Troper died from an accidental overdose resulting from high concentrations of alprazolam alongside cocaine, amphetamine, and hydroxyzine.
Besides Marco, Susan was a mother of four more children. Marco was discovered unresponsive in his dormitory at the University of California on February 13, 2024. The Berkeley Fire Department immediately arrived at the spot and although they tried to revive Marco, he was pronounced dead.
Susan's husband Dennis Troper shared a Facebook post a day ago, confirming the news of her demise. He added a few photos to the post and recalled his wife's contributions over the years, describing her as a "best friend and partner." Denis continued by saying:
"Her impact on our family and the world was immeasurable. We are heartbroken, but grateful for the time we had with her. Please keep our family in your thoughts as we navigate this difficult time."
Sheryl Sandberg, who previously served as Meta CEO, shared a tribute post on Facebook and mentioned the impact of Susan Wojcicki in her life. Sheryl stated that Susan taught her many things about business and assisted her in creating a "growing, fairly chaotic organization." Sherly referred to Susan by writing:
"As one of the most important women leaders in tech – the first to lead a major company – she was committed to expanding opportunities for women throughout Silicon Valley. I don't believe my career would be what is today without her unwavering support."

The Santa Clara, California native's father Stanley Wojcicki was employed at Stanford University as a physics professor. Her mother Esther also pursued a career in the same field. Susan told CNBC Make It in 2018 that she and her sister Janet were lucky to get a lot of independence during their childhood.
"I think the one thing that my parents really did is they gave us a taste of freedom. And they encouraged it. They encouraged us to find out passions, they weren't controlling."
Susan Wojcicki had four siblings among her family members and she completed her graduation from Harvard University. She then acquired her master's from the University of California and the Anderson School of Management.
Susan Wojcicki was employed at Intel Corporation and later joined Google as a marketing manager. She continued serving in different positions in the company, including senior vice president of Advertising & Commerce. Google eventually acquired YouTube in 2014 and she joined the latter as CEO.
YouTube slowly developed itself as one of the most popular video platforms for different people around the world. YouTube also witnessed a rise in the number of users which reached the mark of billions in a short period. The video platform launched multiple other services in the last few years such as YouTube Premium, YouTube TV, and YouTube Shorts.
Susan Wojcicki addressed the evolution of YouTube in an interview with Female Founders Fund in 2019 and said:
"Today's creators on YouTube have built an entire creative economy and are redefining the face of media. They are truly next-generation media businesses, with millions of views and global brands, who are contributing to local and global economies, and creating jobs."
Susan tied the knot with Denis Troper in 1998. Apart from him, Wojcicki's survivors include her four children alongside sisters, Anne and Janet.
