Who is Snoop Dogg?

Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr, famously known by his stage name Snoop Dogg is an American Rapper who rose to fame after featuring on Dr. Dre's debut solo single "Deep Cover" and later on "The Chronic" in 1992. The rapper's debut solo album "Doggystyle" was produced by Dr Dre and was released in November 1993 by Death Row Records.

His first debut album turned out to be a huge hit and was at the number one position in the popular album charts. Since then, Snoop has sold over 23 million albums in the U.S. and 35 million albums worldwide. Snoop has also bagged plenty of awards including an American Music Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and 17 Grammy Award nominations.

Snoop was born on October 20, 1971, in Long Beach, California. His father Vernell Varnado was a Vietnam War veteran, singer, and mail carrier who ended up abandoning Snoop and his mother Beverly Tate just three months after his birth. Snoop was then named after his stepfather, Calvin Cordozar Broadus Sr.

His parents nicknamed him "Snoopy" during his early childhood days due to his affection for the cartoon character from peanuts. Broadus was known for his singing and piano-playing skills in his church choir. He began rapping in the sixth grade and often was caught engaging in unlawful activities in his teenage years.

Shortly after graduating from high school in 1989, Snoop was arrested for possession of cocaine. At the start of his career, Snoop's early solo freestyle over "Hold On" by En Vogue was on a mixtape that was heard by rapper Dr Dre, who was left impressed by his skills and called in Snoop for an audition.

The rapper began using his stage name, Snoop Doggy Dogg during his initial years as a rapper. Working with Dr. Dre twice at the beginning of his career and forming his first group, The Dogg Pound, is what led to the commercial success of his debut album, Doggystyle. Snoop was known for working with Death Row Records.

In 1993, Snoop was charged with first-degree murder for shooting Philip Woldermariam. It later came to light that the former rival gang member was actually killed by Snoop's bodyguard McKinley Lee. He was freed from all charges on February 20, 1996. Snoop's second album Tha Doggfather was released in November 1996.

After his contract expired with Death Row Records, Snoop signed with Master P's No Limit Records in 1998. From that year to 2006, Snoop witnessed continued success. His albums, like the 2002 released ‘Paid Tha Cost To Be Da Bo$$’ to 2006 released album ‘Tha Blue Carpet Treatment' were chartbusters and sold many copies.

From 2007 to 2012, Snoop made headlines for many achievements. Firstly, he was making history by becoming the first artist to release a track as a ringtone right before its release. The rapper is also known for his debut in Bollywood with his rap in the song "Singh is Kinng" for Akshay Kumar starrer Singh Is Kinng in 2008. During that timeline, he also worked with artists like Soulja Boy, Katy Perry, and Australian singer Jessica Mauboy.

In his current career timeline, Snoop once again shared the stage with Dr. Dre as he performed the halftime show of Super Bowl LVI alongside Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar. On February 10, Snoop announced that he was officially in charge at Death Row Records. Early this year he announced that he has a new album 'Missionary' produced by Dr. Dre coming out soon.
