There are two teams in this multiplayer game: an offensive team and a defensive team. Teams will either attack and win or annihilate one another.

In South Korea, kids play a game called "squid," also known as "ojing." The game is named after a squid because of the way the game board is drawn on the ground. Regional spellings of the name include "squid takkari" and "squid gaisan," with the latter thought to be a play on the Japanese verb kaisen, which means "to start a war."

There are two teams in this multiplayer game: an offensive team and a defensive team. There are two main goals: either the attackers want to accomplish their goal with the attack or the teams want to destroy one another. For various areas and groups, there are different versions of the rules, and regional names of the game vary. The game is played informally among kids, so there aren't many official written rules, and the common characteristics are mostly attested to by numerous people who played it when they were kids.

A localized version of the squid game that is well-liked in Busan is called squid ttaeng. Typically, the game has ten or more players. The abundance of squid in the waters surrounding Gadeokdo island and the appeal of squid as a snack among local kids are thought to have had an impact on the game's development.

Two teams of at least ten players each are formed to begin the game. Drawn is a pentagon-shaped squid with a circular tail. In a game of rock, paper, scissors, the winning team becomes the defensive team, and the losing team becomes the offensive team. The game is won by the offensive team, and the two teams switch sides if they reach the defensive team's home and yell "Ttaeng."

What are the general rules of the Squid Game?

The "houses" are the respective teams' home bases. The defensive team's home is in the bottom rectangle, the offensive team's home is in the top circle, and the middle triangle serves as a meeting place between the two teams. The offensive team's goal is to exit their house, move outside the figure around to the bottom of the defensive house, and then pass through the figure to enter their house once more.

Area 1 is the top circle (offensive house); area 2 is the tip of the triangle (promotion area for the defense), covering a bit of area one as well; Area 3 is the lower square (defensive house), and area 4 is between the triangle and square (promotion area for the offense).

Attacking players must hop on one foot only until they "promote," which can be done by either reaching area 2 after passing through area 3 or by hopping over the thin section of the figure between the two areas marked with a 4. When they advance, they can stand on both feet. By pushing them over a line in the figure they are not allowed to cross, the defensive team tries to eliminate the players from the offensive team.

This usually entails forcing players who have entered the figure out or forcing players who are trying to hop over the figure at 4 into the triangle. By forcing every defender out of the figure, the attackers have a chance to win because defensive team members who exit the figure are also eliminated.

What is the plot of the Squid Game series?

A series of kid's games are offered as an opportunity to win a significant cash prize, and Seong Gi-hun, a divorced father and debt-ridden gambler who lives with his elderly mother, accepts the invitation. After accepting the offer, he is taken to an unidentified location, where he meets 455 other players who are all in various states of dire financial straits.

Players are required to wear green tracksuits, and masked guards in pink jumpsuits keep them under constant observation. The Front Man, who wears a black mask and a black uniform, oversees the games.

The players quickly learn that dropping a game results in their death, which increases the potential ₩45.6 billion dollar grand prize by ₩100 million for each death. Gi-hun forms alliances with other participants, such as his childhood friend Cho Sang-woo and North Korean defector Kang Sae-byeok, in an effort to survive the psychological and physical challenges of the games.

The show centers on a competition in which 456 participants, all of whom are experiencing extreme financial hardship, put their lives in danger by participating in a series of dangerous children's games in an effort to win a prize of ₩45.6 billion. Hwang had developed the concept in response to his own early-life financial struggles, the class divide in South Korea, and capitalism.

Although he had originally written it in 2009, he was unable to find a production company to support the idea until Netflix became interested in it around 2019 as part of their effort to increase the variety of international programming that they offered.

Is there a sequel to The Squid Game?

Hwang initially had no immediate plans to write a sequel to Squid Game due to the pressure of writing and producing the first series' nine episodes by himself. He admitted that he did not have well-thought-out plans for a sequel and that, if he did, he would probably need assistance from a team of writers and directors. Hwang later speculated on the likelihood of a second season, telling CNN, "given the show's enormous popularity."

However, a second season was approved by Netflix in 2022 and it is set to be released on December 26th 2024 while a third and final season is set to be released sometime in 2025. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said "I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story. We'll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride."
