How was Yellowstone developed?

Taylor Sheridan started working on the series in 2013, having recently given up acting and started writing screenplays. Sheridan set the series in Montana and began writing the initial screenplays in Livingston after having lived in rural areas of states like Texas and Wyoming. When Sheridan first proposed the show to HBO, the network refused.

Yellowstone, Paramount Network's debut scripted series, received the go-ahead in May 2017 from Paramount. Sheridan was to write, direct, and executive-produce the television show. Executive producers John Linson, Art Linson, Harvey Weinstein, and David Glasser were also supposed to be involved. The Weinstein Company and Linson Entertainment were supposed to be the production companies working on the project.

Harvey Weinstein's name and those of The Weinstein Company were taken off the credits for the series in October 2017 as a result of news of sexual abuse allegations against him. Although The Weinstein Company was involved in production, Kevin Kay, president of Paramount Network, made it clear during the annual Television Critics Association winter press tour in January 2018 that Yellowstone would not have that company's credits or logo.

He said that when it becomes available, the company's new name will be used to replace Weinstein Television in the show's credits. The series' June 20 debut date was confirmed on the same day. The series was renewed by Paramount Network for a second season in July 2018, which was scheduled to debut in 2019. The second season's debut date, June 19, 2019, was confirmed in March 2019. The third season of the show was ordered by Paramount in June 2019, and it debuted on June 21, 2020.

Ahead of the third season's debut, the Paramount Network renewed the show for a fourth season in February 2020. The start of the fourth season was on November 7, 2021. The fifth season of the show, which will be split into two installments of seven episodes each, was renewed by the Paramount Network in February 2022. On November 13, 2022, the fifth season officially began.
