Dua Lipa, the Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter, has captured the hearts of millions with her powerful voice and infectious energy. While the English-Albanian artist's music often exudes confidence and empowerment, Lipa has been through her fair share of personal struggles including the pain of heartbreak about which she has been open about.
In a candid interview with Ellen Falconer for RNZ, she revealed her emotional journey and how she overcame her feelings of inadequacy through her songwriting. In the interview, Dua Lipa shed light on her emotional turmoil and her experiences of feeling incompetent after going through a difficult breakup before her big break. She says:
"I never expected anything to do what New Rules did. It kind of took like a whole world of its own and although I felt really passionately about the song and the video and.. it was really the video that was really my story. That's what I would do and I'd go through a breakup would be with my friends without the synchronized echoing and the matching robes but pretty much like I would always go to my friends for comfort but also advice."
In addition to the battles in her life, Lipa has been an advocate for mental health and self-care. She hopes to break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage others to seek the support they require.
Dua Lipa's Journey Through Her Struggles
As Dua Lipa continues to make waves in the music industry with her chart-topping hits, she continues to talk about her coping mechanisms and how she navigates through the darkest moments.
In the interview with RNZ, she emphasises the importance of allowing oneself to feel pain and process emotions. She explains how and why she feels New Rules was relatable to her audience:
"It's very relatable. I think everyone has gone through that at some point or will go through that at some point and like I said like I'm so good at giving advice to other people but not taking my own and that, you know, the song and the video really kind of show that - that you.. you know.. somebody helps you get through something and you have to help your friends and the people around you get through it too."
Dua Lipa also spoke about the cathartic power of music in helping her heal and connect with her emotions. When asked whether she finds it easier to put her advice in lyric form instead of action, she says:
"Well, I found that in most my songs like I've always found it so therapeutic to write about things. Like even in Hotter Than Hell like when I started writing that song it was initially quite a sad song so I came out of a really awful breakup and I was.. I just felt like I wasn't good enough but I didn't want that person to know that I felt like that so I kind of had this false sense of confidence for that song and then as I was writing it I started getting over the situation and I felt more empowered and sometimes even when you kind of tell yourself so many times in your head 'That it's not the way you thought it was.', it helps."
The two-year gap between Dua Lipa's debut single 'New Love' and her eponymous debut studio album' has been described as a whirlwind by her.
As Dua Lipa continues to evolve as an artist, she remains committed to using her platform to uplift others.
