Downey hails from Manhattan, New York City and he was born on April 4, 1965. His father Robert Downey Sr was a filmmaker and his mother Elsie Ann was an actress who appeared in Sr's films. During his childhood days, he used to play minor roles in his father's films.

His first acting debut was when he was five years old. As he grew, Downey made his way to Hollywood to pursue his career in acting. His breakthrough role was his sidekick role in Tuff Turf and John Hughes' Weird Science. Downey's first lead role was in the 1987 released movie, The Pick-up Artist.

During his youth years, Downey gained immense recognition for his work. He also played Charlie Chaplin in one of his famous movies which bagged him a nomination for best actor at the Academy Award 65th ceremony. However, his fame came to a halt during 1996-2001 after he was arrested multiple times on charges related to drugs.

After five years of substance abuse, arrest, rehab, and relapse, Downey took back the reins of his life and focused on full-time recovery. He made his acting comeback by lip-synching in the video for Elton John's single "I Want Love". He could make his full return to Hollywood with the help of his close friend and fellow actor Mel Gibson.

Downey then began appearing in movies like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Zodiac, Gothika, etc. During his resurgence, the project that got him super famous and set his career on the right track was Marvel's Iron Man and Tropic Thunder. Both films were commercial successes at the box office and that led to him gaining back his lost fame in the industry. Since then Downey has worked on various hit projects and continues to do so.

Robert Downey Jr. is married to producer Susan Downey and the two began dating on the sets of their film Gothika. They got married in August 2005. Susan and Downey have two children, a boy, and a girl. Before Susan, Downey was married to American singer Deborah Falconer. They share a son named Indio Falconer Downey.

However, their marriage began falling apart due to Downey's repeated trips to rehab and jail. In 2001 Falconer called it quits with Downey and their divorce was finalized on April 26, 2004.
