Yes, Tim McGraw, a country music artist, is the new Dutton family member in the Yellowstone universe.

Although Tim McGraw is best known as a Grammy Award-winning musician, he has also become a successful actor, appearing in films like Friday Night Lights, The Blind Side, and Tomorrowland. Fans got their first look at James Dillard Dutton, the protagonist of Yellowstone spinoff 1883.

The fact that both shows are set in different eras may make viewers think that a crossover between McGraw and Faith Hill’s characters and the parent series is unlikely. While "1883" takes place in the late 19th century, "Yellowstone" is set in the present day. However, the show's creators were able to introduce McGraw and Hill characters to the parent series via a few clever flashback sequences.

In the end, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's appearances in "Yellowstone" generated interest in the prequel series' depictions of their characters' lives. Additionally, it gives the audience a chance to interact with the people who built the Yellowstone Ranch and learn about the extensive history of the Dutton family.

Who does Tim McGraw play in Yellowstone?

The main cast of the prequel series "1883" consists of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. James Dillard Dutton and Margaret Dutton are portrayed as the first generation Dutton patriarch and matriarch to settle in Montana. The couple, who are also a real-life couple, play the great-grandparents of "Yellowstone" protagonist John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner.

In "Yellowstone," McGraw's character is first introduced, and in the prequel series, he takes the lead. James Dutton first appears in the "Yellowstone" season 4 premiere, "Half the Money," in a flashback that is set in 1893, ten years after the events of the prequel series. The more significant James Dutton flashback scene, however, appears in "No Kindness for the Coward," the eighth episode of "Yellowstone" season 4. James makes an appearance with Hill's Margaret in the flashback that takes place in the year 1893. The flashback also includes John Dutton Sr. and Spencer Dutton, the couple's two sons.

As James Dutton pursues a group of horse thieves in the episode, viewers get to see him in a more vicious light. In a shootout, James brutally murders all but one of the thieves. James, however, also sustained injuries in the gunfight. Margaret and the kids are waiting for James to come home and are wishing for his safety at home. James eventually succumbs to the gunshot wound and dies.

The first episode, "Half the Money," featured James Dutton and his preteen sons, John Sr. and Spencer, who were respectively portrayed by actors Jack Michael Doke and Charlie Stover.
