Former Today co-host Kathie Lee Gifford opened up about being hospitalized following a fall when she was already recovering from hip replacement surgery. In an interview with People published on Tuesday, July 30, the singer, actress, author, and presenter told the publication that she had earlier moved 300 books by herself and weakened her body during recent Nashville book signings.
She stated:
"It's my own fault."
The day after the signings, the author tripped and fell when she hurriedly tried to open the door to welcome her friends who came to pick her up. She ended up fracturing both the front and back of her pelvis, which she called "unbelievably painful". Earlier this month, Gifford revealed that she had undergone hip replacement surgery prior to which she was in "agonizing pain".
"The next thing you know, I am back in the hospital with a fractured pelvis"— Kathie Lee Gifford
In an interview with People magazine, 70-year-old Kathie Lee Gifford revealed she had a painful fall that fractured her pelvis, leading to over a week in the hospital. The former Today co-host blamed the fall on herself, attributing it to moving 300 books alone at a Nashville book signing, which weakened her body. She tripped the next day while trying to open the door for her friends.
The singer and actress also revealed that it did not take much for her pelvis to fracture as she was already weak in that spot. Kathie Lee Gifford told the publication:
"The next thing you know, I am back in the hospital with a fractured pelvis, the front and the back. That's more painful than anything I went through with the hip. The pelvis is unbelievably painful. But anyway, here I am."
Kathie Lee Gifford called the whole ordeal a "humbling experience" and shared that she chose to stay at the hospital for a week as she did not trust herself. She told the publication:
"You think you know your body and the next thing you know, your body changes when you get older. And as much as I don't wanna think about it, I am."
Kathie lamented how it was summer for everyone but her. However, she still insisted that it was "OK" as she was simply going to go to her "little farm" and stick her feet in her salt pool. Kathie felt like the lord was telling her to slow down as she's been running her whole life. Kathie told People that she felt like the lord was telling her to try to stop and smell the "gazillion roses" that she'd already planted.
Earlier this month, during a July 17 appearence on Today, Kathie Lee Gifford told Hoda Kotb that she was currently recovering after a hip replacement surgery. The doctors had initially been looking at problems in her spine, but by the time they found out that it was her hip that was giving her trouble, Kathi was in "agonizing pain" and "terrible" discomfort. She recalled:
"My doctor finished the surgery, came in to tell me it went beautifully, and then he said, ‘Kathie, how have you been existing all this time? (You had) some of the worst hips I’ve ever seen.’"
Kathie Lee Gifford had earlier told People magazine that her hip replacement surgery and recovery had been one of "the most painful situations " of her life. Her surgeon attributed the damage to her hip to her active lifestyle. She recalled her surgeon telling her:
"You climbed mountains, you made movies, you got on stages. You never took off your high heels, and you kept going and that's why you're going through what you're going through."
However, she told the publication at the time that she was not going to change her lifestyle as that was what God put her on earth to do. On July 16, she even released a book titled Herod and Mary: The True Story of the Tyrant King and the Mother of the Risen Savior.
