Kendrick Lamar’s Career
Lamar stopped using his stage name (K. Dot) and began using his first and middle names professionally after joining the hip-hop supergroup Black Hippy as a founding member. His first studio album, “Section 80,” a conscious hip-hop record, was made available in 2011. Positive reviews for the album and his debut single, "HiiiPower," were received.
Lamar signed a record deal with Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment in 2012 and put out his second studio album, "Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City," through Interscope Records. The West Coast and gangsta rap album, which also featured the singles "Swimming Pools (Drank)," "Backseat Freestyle," and "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe," received widespread critical acclaim as well as commercial success.
Lamar's jazz-influenced third studio album, “To Pimp a Butterfly” (2015), was inspired by a trip to South Africa. It was universally praised and rose to the top of the Billboard 200 chart, becoming his first. With Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" remix, he reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time that year.
Lamar's fourth studio album, “Damn” (2017), featured R&B, pop, and psychedelic soul experiments. It gave rise to Humble, his first solo number-one single, and was the first non-classical and non-jazz composition to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music.
“Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers” (2022), the fifth studio album by Lamar, served as his farewell to TDE after a four-year absence. With his creative partner Dave Free, with whom he co-founded the creative collective PGLang, he has directed and produced a number of music videos and movies.
