Merpeople on Netflix involves real-life mermaids
While the mermaid fins look glamorous, they are heavy as they carry the burden of their anxieties, challenges, and pressures of entering a full-blown performance industry.
According to its official YouTube description, Merpeople "dives into the fascinating world of underwater performers who have turned their love for the mystical sea creatures into real-world careers."
The official synopsis of the show further reads:
"From putting on dazzling small-town shows in Florida to the crowning of the King and Queen of the Seas in the Bahamas, this series will take you on a journey of passion and perseverance."
The Merpeople trailer gives viewers scenes of what they can expect. The trailer begins with a voice explaining how the concept of mermaids can be seen as mythical and magical, but it is only a fantasy, unless it isn't. The scene then shifts to showcasing different types and colors of fins, followed by performers wearing them and jumping underwater.
While one performer echoes viewers' questions about how it's even a job, the other explains in a confessional:
"This is a half billion dollar industry. There are pageants. There are conventions. There are competitions. There are auditions. There are shows."
The Merpeople trailer proceeds to give viewers glimpses of performances, where in one case, a performer is seen in a large cubicle filled with water, where she is seen swimming underwater and mesmerizing the audience. The teaser proceeds to tell stories of the performers.
According to Decider, the reality series will see several performers, including Chè Monique, founder of Society of Fat Mermaids, and Morgana Alba, the founder of Circus Siren Pod, among several others.
While one decided to move from Arkansas to a better place to perform and make her career, the other focused on the aspect of entertaining people.
A Merpeople cast member described the challenges of getting into the mermaid performer business and said:
"I get emails all the time from people telling me that they want to be a professional mermaid and my first thought is, oh you have no idea what you're getting yourself into."
The latter half of the trailer focuses on the gruesome challenges of being in the industry. A company's owner warns her participants in the auditions that she doesn't want "dead mermaids," and another one struggles with hypothermia.
Other Merpeople cast members are seen dealing with the pressures of delivering an incredible underwater performance. The trailer focuses on how important the job is for them, with the risk of potentially "losing everything."
The first look ends with the focus also on the relationships built throughout their journey. Viewers will see passion prevail as the cast ensures to deliver an impressive performance.
