The upcoming American action spy movie Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One is set to release on July 14, 2023. It is the seventh and last movie in the Mission: Impossible series and the follow-up to Mission: Impossible—Fallout (2018). Dead Reckoning is directed by Christopher McQuarrie and also prominently features Nick Offerman, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Hayley Atwell.
The "Dead Reckoning" is allegedly divided into two parts. On June 28, 2024, the second part is expected to be released in theaters. The plot details for Part Two are currently being kept under wraps. The 60-year-old first portrayed Ethan Hunt in "Mission: Impossible" in 1996, which is almost 30 years ago. For "Part Two," Cruise has already begun shooting.
According to Fox News, Cruise recently took a helicopter "onto a US aircraft carrier off the eastern coast of Italy" to shoot movie sequences for the sequel earlier this month. Antonio Parente, the chairman of the Apulia Film Commission, told Fox News, "Cruise flew into the port of Bari on the country's southeastern coast, where he spent the night at a five-star hotel before choppering to the floating set the next day."
Plot
The story's plot hasn't been discussed much by the director. Nevertheless, during his appearance on the "Light the Fuse" podcast, he did discuss how the new film will enhance the emotional growth of the cast.
"When we went into making Fallout, I said to Tom, ‘I really want to make this more of an emotional journey for [Ethan Hunt],'" McQuarrie disclosed. "Going into this, I said, ‘I want to take what we learned from Fallout and apply it to every character in the movie. I want everyone to have an emotional arc. I just want the movie to have more feeling across the board."
It appears that Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part 1 will play on our emotions in addition to raising our adrenaline levels to extreme levels. Only time will tell if the movie lives up to its promise, but this might just be the most impressive “Mission: Impossible” yet.
Stunts
Tom Cruise has performed amazing physical feats in previous movies of the series, including free climbing, hanging off the edge of a plane, climbing the world's tallest building, and making jumps from an airplane at 25,000 feet. He also broke his foot while filming a scene but managed to finish it.
There will be at least three major action set-pieces that will undoubtedly occur in “Dead Reckoning,” thanks to the trailer, including Cruise ramping off a cliff on a motorcycle before jumping off and opening a parachute, a city-wide chase that decimates Rome, and Cruise and Morales brawling before a fast train crashes in the first film.
As the audience can see, Cruise is speeding off a cliff on a motorcycle. It has been publicly referred to as "the biggest stunt in cinema history" by the production team as well. While the clip is playing, Tom Cruise can be heard saying, "This is far and away the most dangerous thing we have ever attempted."
Characters and Cast
Ethan Hunt; the IMF agent and manager of a group of operatives, is portrayed by Tom Cruise.
Luther Stickell; an IMF computer technician who works on Hunt's team and is his best friend, is portrayed by Ving Rhames.
Benji Dunn; an IMF technical field agent and a member of Hunt's team, is portrayed by Simon Pegg.
Ilsa Faust; a former MI6 agent who joined Hunt's group during Rogue Nation and Fallout, was portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson.
Alanna Mitsopolis; a black market arms dealer also known as the “White Widow,” is portrayed by Vanessa Kirby. "Max's" daughter from the first movie.
Hayley Atwell portrays Grace. Although Atwell acknowledged that her character's loyalties are "somewhat ambiguous," Christopher McQuarrie called her a "destructive force of nature" in his review.
Shea Whigham portrays Jasper Briggs
Esai Morales plays the main antagonist of the movie
Eugene Kittridge; a former IMF director who was last seen in the first Mission: Impossible film, is portrayed by Henry Czerny.
Alanna's brother, Zola Mitsopolis, is portrayed by Frederick Schmidt.
Henry Czerny, a character we haven't seen since the first movie back in 1996, is arguably the most notable cast addition so far. Czerny's Kittridge is unquestionably an intriguing addition to Dead Reckoning, and all indications are that he will play a significant part in bridging the gaps to Hunt's past.
Unspecified roles have been cast for Pom Klementieff, Rob Delaney, Cary Elwes, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss, Charles Parnell, Greg Davis, Marcin Dorociski, Lampros Kalfuntzos, Mariela Garriga, and Antonio Bustorff.
Production
Under the working title "Libra," production on Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part 1 was set to start on February 20, 2020, in Venice. Prior to moving to Rome for 40 days of filming, the movie was supposed to be shot in Venice for three weeks. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic spreading to Italy, production was halted.
The UK granted permission for the crew to start filming in July 2020 without having to undergo the required 14-day quarantine. Soon after, Norway received similar approval for filming.
The actual shooting started on September 6, 2020. McQuarrie posted updates on his Instagram account announcing the start of filming. After 12 crew members tested positive for COVID-19 on set in October 2020, production was once again halted in Italy. This time, just one week later, filming started again.
The Middle East's production was finished in February 2021. Filming for a train wreck scene began in the small village of Levisham, North Yorkshire, UK, on April 20, 2021. In June 2021, filming was once again put on hold for 14 days after a production worker reportedly tested positive for COVID-19. The cast and crew started filming in Birmingham's Grand Central Station in August 2021. Early in September 2021, the production was finished.
Since the initial postponement, there have been numerous reports coming from the Dead Reckoning set that have confirmed a number of delays, including a leaked audio recording of Cruise criticizing crew members for not following COVID prevention protocol.
Release Date
The movie will be released in two parts, the first of which will be in theaters on July 14, 2023, and the second of which will be on June 28, 2024.
Initial plans called for Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part 2 to be released on August 5, 2022, and for the two films to be shot concurrently. Sadly, COVID-19 derailed those plans, causing the eighth film to first be postponed to July 7, 2023, and then to June 28, 2024.
Posters and Trailers
While the previous teaser trailer showed Cruise running on top of a moving train, the new poster features Cruise freefalling against a mountainous landscape while chasing after a motorcycle. A Paramount feature film has described the risk the actor took to set the stage for the audience's entertainment, as the film promises one of the riskiest and most daring stunts ever pulled off in the history of cinema.
On April 28, 2022, a trailer for the movie made its world premiere exclusively at CinemaCon. It featured an introduction by Tom Cruise that was captured while he was flying a biplane. On May 21, 2022, the trailer was leaked to social media. On May 23, 2022, it was formally released online. On September 8, 2022, the CinemaCon introduction became officially available.
Even Simon Pegg was unaware of the titles of Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Parts 1 and 2 until the trailer was made public due to the film's extreme secrecy. In an interview for the film "Luck" with Collider's own Steve Weintraub, Pegg stated the following:
"Do you know what? I found out on the day of the trailer and not from Chris McQuarrie.” “I found out from the trailer.” “No, no one told me, so I texted McQ and was like, 'Dead Reckoning? Were you going to tell us that at some point?' I heard it was going to be something else, but I like that. I like that because it reminds me of what ... Land of the Dead was originally called Dead Reckoning.” “So finally, I get to be in a film called Dead Reckoning."
Soundtrack
Early in May 2020, it was announced that, after scoring the sixth Mission: Impossible movie, composer Lorne Balfe would return to write the scores for the seventh and eighth installments. On June 23, 2022, Paramount Music released Balfe's music from the teaser trailer as a single digitally.
