Netflix's Muted chronicled the suspenseful story of Sergio, who was released after six years of prison time. He was arrested for killing his own parents. However, there was no solid evidence proving he was guilty of the crime. He was taken under keen observation by a psychiatrist named Ana whose deep interest in Sergio's case soon turned into obsession.

Throughout the entire series, Sergio refused to properly open up about what happened to his parents Javier and Blanca six years ago. However, in the final episode of the series' season 1, he was seen finally opening up about what actually occurred that fateful day. He stated that his mother forcefully conducted experiments on him by medicating him with different drugs.

That day, she tried to drug his sister Noa as well. According to Sergio, he and his father wanted to protect his sister by preventing her mother from giving her drugs. Thus, they tried to stop her. However, while having a heated argument, his father Javier pushed her mother over the balcony accidentally. As soon as he realized what he had just done, he couldn't accept the guilt and pain. So, he took his own life by jumping off of the balcony.

However, after Sergio's sister Noa arrived at the spot, she revealed what truly happened that day by reminding Sergio of the brutal truth. In reality, Sergio was extremely scared and hostile to everything and everyone. Their mother loved him and tried to help him balance his emotions by giving him drugs.

That day, Sergio had a massive breakdown and went on to push both Javier and Blanca over the balcony. Noa was the only witness to the terrible incident.

At the end of the Netflix series, Noa, who had been adopted by Ana, the psychiatrist obsessed with Sergio, wanted her to leave the case behind by telling her the truth about Sergio. However, Ana still chose to stay by his side as she could relate to him. She also felt lonely and misunderstood in her life and could see why Sergio behaved the way he did.

At the very end of the series' first season, Sergio and Ana were seen going to the same ill-fated balcony, from where Sergio's parents fell off. Later on, a grainy and unclear image showcased that one of them falling from the balcony, while the other watched. Who fell was not disclosed, leaving audiences in suspense at the end of season 1.
