Six days after the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Luigi Mangione - the prime suspect in the killing - was arrested in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, December 10. Following Mangione's arrest, the NYPD is reportedly on high alert for any "copy-cat" violent activity that might take place in the near future.
Daily Mail reports that Rebecca Weiner - the Deputy Commissioner of the NYPD - and Josh Kenny - the Chief of NYPD detectives - spoke to ABCNY about the possible concerns of copy-cat killers. Weiner started by saying:
"Whenever an incident of this high prominence takes place, our work is to get ahead of any resonance and in particular, any copycat activity that it may inspire."
The deputy commissioner continued:
"We do a lot of work in the online space, we also do a lot of work in the 3-D space. And we also, as part of that, we'll surge resources, protective resources, around the city wherever we need to, when we're anticipating and dealing with a big uptick in threats."
This caution is triggered by several "wanted" posters of other healthcare CEOs popping up across the streets of Manhattan.
The NYPD officials have called Luigi Mangione a "careful and complicated man"
Rebecca Weiner and Josh Kenny talked to CBS News about Luigi Mangione's arrest, revealing multiple things found in his backpack that would play into the case.
Some of these things involved a fake ID, a 3-page-long handwritten document, and a Faraday bag - which allegedly helped prevent the police officers from tracing Mangione.
Describing the bag, Kenny said:
"You can put your phone in there so we can't track your phone. It doesn't transmit a signal. It blocks the signal. In essence, it's like if you wrapped your phone in aluminum foil and put it in a bag."
The officers also called Luigi Mangione a "careful and complicated man" when it came to allegedly planning the attack on Brian Thompson. Per the news outlet, the 26-year-old had allegedly ordered the receiver of the weapon online, and designed the rest of the gun, in addition to the suppressor, by himself using a 3D printer at home.
Speaking about the motive behind Mangione's attack on Thomspon, they said it was possibly the outcome of an accident he suffered in July 2023, which led to his visit to an emergency room.
The information recovered from the document found in Luigi's backpack made it apparent that he was furious at the healthcare industry. Weiner said regarding this:
"When you start using rhetoric like 'These parasites had it coming,' you are referencing an anti-corporatist mentality that goes beyond an individual grievance toward a particular injury he may have suffered."
The officers then went on to address the concern that Mangione's shooting could likely lead to more violence, especially in New York.
"There are also posters that we've seen online and in New York with various CEOs' pictures on them ... These are perceived threats, and it is important for everybody to know that we will take these threats very seriously."
Meanwhile, all the belongings found in Luigi Mangione's backpack have been sent to the forensics for DNA testing to confirm if he was the shooter. While no fingerprint was obtained from the bullets found at the murder scene, a cellphone recovered from the scene did have fingerprints that could help confirm their suspicions.
According to CNN, Luigi Mangione was arrested on Tuesday at a McDonald’s outlet on East Plank Road off Interstate 99 in Pennsylvania. A customer at the fast-food joint seemed to recognize him, thereby alerting the staff who then called the police officers with the information.
