New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted on a criminal charge placed on him in the federal court in Manhattan. As per CNBC, the indictment has been sealed, and undisclosed for the time being, however, it stems from a case in which he was accused of being involved in donations to his 2021 mayoral campaign.
Furthermore, the allegations also date back to as early as 2015, with one charge involving a foreign national’s contribution. As per the publication, a source has also revealed that the indictment points to as much as $20 million in donations that Adams’ campaign received through the city’s Campaign Finance Program.
Additionally, the indictment reportedly claims that Adams, now 64, made a trip to Turkey to secure unlawful campaign funds. As soon as the news made its way to the realms of social media, many netizens began reacting to it.

“If I am charged, I am innocent and I will fight this”- Eric Adams issues statement after indictment
After Eric Adams was indicted on Wednesday, Septemeber 25, 2024, he released a video statement where he claimed that he was “innocent,” and would “fight this” to prove the same. He said:
“But they would not be surprising. I always knew that If I stood my ground for all of you I would be a target — and a target I became. If I am charged, I am innocent and I will fight this with every ounce of my strength and spirit.”
He continued:
"Now, if I am charged many may say I should resign because I cannot manage the city while fighting the case. I can also understand how everyday New Yorkers would be concerned that I cannot do my job while I face accusations, but I have been facing these lies for months."
Furthermore, the charges on Eric Adams come in almost a year after his electronic devices were seized by the authorities during a home search conducted.
As per BBC, if Adams’ tenure ends prematurely, the city’s public advocate, Jumaane Williams will be made New York City’s next acting mayor.
For the unversed, Eric Adams, born in 1960, is currently serving as the 100th Mayor of the New York City. Prior to holding this position, Adams was a part of the New York Transit Police, and then the New York City Police Department.
Apart from this, he was also a part of the New York State Senate and then finally swore as the Mayor after the midnight on January 1, 2022.
