Angelina Jolie finalized her divorce with Brad Pitt on December 30, 2024, after over eight years of legal fighting. A few days later, on January 3, 2025, her cover story for W Magazine's Best Performances issue was released, where she answered dozens of questions, including one about "pet peeves." At the part of the feature where she was asked if she had any pet peeves, the Maria actress said:
"So many things. But my pet peeve is somebody who is a liar."
Without dropping any names, Angelina Jolie explained what makes somebody her "pet peeve." She added:
"Somebody who feels a need to not say the truth or what they want, what they feel. There's a big version of that—and I'm not trying to be heavy about it—but people who say one thing and mean another, who aren't completely who they are. I think a lot of people don't say what they mean."
Jolie's confession about what irks her and her cryptic quote about "liars" came after she and Brad Pitt finally signed off on their divorce. The ex-couple have been embroiled in an eight-year-long divorce battle since she filed to end their marriage in 2016, two years after they wed in 2014.
More about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's divorce
In 2016, Angelina Jolie filed to divorce Brad Pitt, citing irreconcilable differences. Drama, scandal, and legal battles on custody and properties continued and it wasn't until December 30, 2024, that the divorce was finalized. On Monday, December 30, Jolie's attorney, James Simon, told People in a statement:
"This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over."
Simon further told the outlet that since Jolie filed to legally end her marriage to Pitt over eight years ago, she and the children left all of the properties they shared with her ex-husband and only focused on "finding peace and healing for their family."
Whether or not her legal battle with Pitt played a role, the Oscar-winning actress shared some insight into the reason for her years-long hiatus from the Hollywood spotlight before she returned to play Maria Callas in Maria. She admitted to Vanity Fair in its December 19, 2024, feature that she "missed being an artist," and shared the reason why she couldn't work on any projects at the time. She said:
"I went very dark for reasons I'd rather not explain, but I didn't have a lot of light and life within me. You're light's dim. I also just needed to be home more, so I couldn't commit large periods of time to pieces."
She eventually returned to acting in Maria, Jolie's first role since Eternals in 2021. Angelina Jolie opened up to Vanity Fair that starring in the Pablo Larrain-directed film was the start of something better for her, saying:
"Really, I think Maria was the beginning of starting to come alive again. I needed a lot of kind people around me to hold my hand."
In the film, Angelina Jolie stars as the famed opera singer Maria Callas, who retreated to Paris in the 1970s, days before her tragic death, after a glamorous yet tumultuous life and career in the public eye. Maria is not available for streaming on Netflix in the US.
