Some TikTokers recently alleged that the Kardashians were buying TikTok on January 1, 2025. This comes after the federal appeals court denied TikTok’s petition for the Supreme Court to pause the legislation that could ban the app in the United States. Netizens have since taken to the video-sharing platform to respond to the viral claims.
TikToker nevrcrd was among the many who went viral on the social networking platform on December 16 after alleging that the Kardashians were buying the Chinese app. He said online:
“The Kardashians is buying the app?... The Kardashians just posted it everywhere that they’re buying TikTok so that American people can still have TikTok… The Kardashians are planning to buy it January 1, 2025. So TikTok is no longer leaving, we’re still going to have this app.”
TikTok user urstepdadzdot also shared the same announcement by claiming that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s daughter, North West, convinced her mother to buy TikTok.
“I don’t know for sure if this is real or not but I hope this sh*t is true. This sh*t is going to make me f**k with the Kardashians, if this sh*t is true… TikTok is worth a lot of f**king money. I don’t know probably the whole family got it put together”
The claims went viral, and the videos amassed thousands of views. However, it is worth noting that neither the Kardashians nor the Jenners have officially announced they are buying TikTok. The theory has been spread by TikTok users attempting to gain views and popularity following the latest news regarding the video-sharing platform.
Hence, it is safe to say that the Kardashian family is not buying the application. Nonetheless, many took to the app to discuss the rumors.
Several others stated online that they were waiting for the Kardashian family to address the rumors.
Others were simply reacting to the news that the application was supposedly not being banned.
Will TikTok get banned? Conditions explored as Kardashians' claim goes viral online
According to USA Today, President Joe Biden-signed Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act will make TikTok illegal in the US if the parent company, Byte Dance, fails to sell the platform by January 29, 2025.
If ByteDance sells the platform before the aforementioned date, the app will remain available for distribution on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
On December 9, TikTok and Byte Dance filed an emergency injunction with the Supreme Court, asking them to review the legislation; however, the injunction was denied, so TikTok's future in the US is murky.
Despite Donald Trump initially being wary of the app, the president-elect said on December 16 that he has a “warm spot” for it as he believes it helped him win the presidential elections. According to USA Today, he said:
“TikTok had an impact, and so we’re taking a look at it. I have a little bit of a warm spot in my heart. I’ll be honest.”
The short-form content app raised concerns in the US as government officials believed it posed a national security threat by having access to American data that could be shared with the Chinese government. In 2022, Joe Biden signed a bill prohibiting the app from being used on government devices.
