"Bane did it better"

Security videos captured the formation of the sinkhole on the soccer field. In the footage, one could notice a lightning pole disappearing and a massive chasm on the surface. Several benches and an artificial turf also disappeared during the incident.

Many users shared their funny reactions to the viral sinkhole video, calling it God's mighty act. Some of the comments read:

“See, even God thinks that soccer sucks,” an X user wrote.
“One way to stop the opponents from scoring,” another internet user stated.
“Even I, an overweight 62 year old, could score a goal in there,” a user mentioned.

Information about reconstructing the soccer field was not available online at the time of publishing this article. Nonetheless, netizens continued to make light of the situation. Other comments read:

“Were there any stained mattresses found in the sink hole or is that just a New York thing?” an X user said.
“Oh no it’s gotta be aliens no way it can be a natural occurring thing,” an X user said.
“That’s the lord,” another person commented.

According to Michael Haynes, Illinois’ parks and recreation director, the sinkhole was estimated to be around 100 feet (30.5 meters) wide and 50 feet (15.2 meters) deep. It was confirmed that no one was injured. Alton Mayor David Gogins addressed the matter during a City Council meeting that took place following the incident. He said:

“It’s unfortunate, but the blessing is that no one was injured. There was no one on the ground at the time the collapse happened. We’re very, very fortunate because as bad as this is, it could’ve been worse because there could’ve been injury or loss of life.”

New Frontier Materials’ Bluff City Minerals subsidiary revealed in an official statement that the hole was caused by “a surface subsidence.” It was formed from an underground mine located around 25 miles away, just north of St. Louis and the Mississippi River. It is worth noting that the mine ran through the soccer field, resulting in the gaping hole. The statement read:

“The impacted area has been secured and will remain off limits for the foreseeable future while inspectors and experts examine the mine and conduct repairs.”

The incident was reported to the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration.
