During his first court appearance, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's murder suspect, Luigi Mangione reportedly claimed that evidence may have been planted on him. On Monday, December 9, Mangione was arrested on gun-related charges and is reportedly the prime suspect in the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson on December 4.
Luigi Mangione was first recognized a few hundred miles from the site of Thompson's shooting at a McDonald's restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania. According to the Associated Press, he was detained on weapons and forgery charges and Manhattan prosecutors filed for murder and other charges hours later.
As per the Altoona police, Mangione was found in possession of a 'ghost gun,' a manifesto, and a fake identification when he was arrested. Pennsylvania police added that he was carrying a Faraday backpack capable of blocking signals and a large amount of cash.
On Monday night, CNN correspondent Danny Freeman revealed the details of Luigi Mangione's Pennsylvania arraignment. According to him, Mangione corrected the prosecutors by stating that the money didn't belong to him and disputed the description of his backpack.
According to Freeman, prosecutors declared that '10,000—8,000 in U.S. dollars and $2,000 in foreign currency were found in his possession. Furthermore, they claimed that the Faraday bag found on him indicated criminal sophistication.
However, Mangione claimed that the alleged money was planted.
"Mangione actually said at the end of that speech by the prosecution, 'I'd like to correct two things. First, I don't know where any of that money came from, I'm not sure if it was planted. And also, that bag was waterproof, so I don't know about criminal sophistication,'" reported Freeman on CNN.
Currently, Mangione is being held without bail in Pennsylvania. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny revealed during a press conference that Mangione would be extradited to New York.
As per Newsweek, his extradition proceedings will likely begin immediately since Luigi Mangione's charges have been filed in New York. However, if he attempts to dispute the extradition. there could be a delay of about 45 days.
