Brittish Williams, one of the most prominent stars on the long-running VH1 series Basketball Wives, has recently been dealing with considerable legal trouble. Williams first joined Basketball Wives in season 3 in 2014 and has been one of the major cast members ever since.
She was previously engaged to professional basketball player Lorenzo Williams, who finished his career in Israel and was also part of the show. Brittish was not married or in a relationship with an NBA player, like most other cast members on the show.
Meanwhile, she had initially been accused of being involved in multiple frauds and pandemic-related scams. Now, during a recent court proceeding in St. Louis, where she was pronounced guilty, a member of her entourage ended up attacking a reporter.
Williams pleaded guilty to a total of 15 fraud counts, from which she had reportedly garnered more than $150,000. It includes tax scams, IRS-related perjury, wire fraud, and bank fraud.
Brittish Williams involved in further controversy after pleading guilty to 15 felony charges
Williams pleaded guilty to a total of 15 counts and was returning to her vehicle along with her entourage. It seemed as if one of her entourage members felt a bit too harassed due to the plethora of reporters who had surrounded the group. The woman can be seen initially trying to cover her face with her gray jacket in the clip posted on social media.
The group continued to shout and asked the reporters “to get out of their way,” despite all of them seemingly maintaining a safe distance. The woman then charged towards one of the reporters and raised her arm threateningly. She also shouted out, asking the reporter to “get out of her way.”
Williams, who is not a part of the current season of Basketball Wives, has further drawn negative attention as a result of the controversy. She had been removed from the show following the court case, which saw her quickly being pronounced guilty.
District Court Judge Henry Autrey, who sentenced the Basketball Wives star, also claimed that she displayed a "fraudster mentality" and had continued to commit fraud even after she was indicted.
"That's a pretty damn good wage. Not only are you out there for people to watch your entertainment, but also for people to watch you. … That's a big obligation."
Brittish Williams first appeared on the show in 2014. She was seen in a relationship with Lorenzo Gordon, who proposed to her at the season reunion. However, after Gordon's stint in Israel, Williams claimed that he had cheated on her while she was away and broke up.
What was Brittish Williams sentenced for?
Williams ended up pleading guilty to a total of 15 felonies and was charged with four years in prison. The 15 charges included 5 counts of middling social security numbers, 4 bank fraud charges, 3 charges for making false statements to the ITA, and 3 more separate charges for wire fraud.
Her attorney, Beau Brindley, claimed later that Williams was being punished for being a celebrity.
"Brittish Williams was punished today, not for fraud, but for her celebrity. The Court chose to treat her more harshly due to her status as a public figure rather than treating similarly situated defendants equally. Ms. Williams' success is not a crime subject to enhanced penalty. And we will challenge this sentence through every legal means available.”
Brindley had initially argued in court for an 18-month sentence. The preliminary investigation had reportedly warranted a 63-month sentence instead, which proved to be what the court went with as well. Alongside the prison sentence, Williams has also been ordered to pay exactly $564,069 in compensation.
As her lawyer’s comments suggest, Williams is not done appealing the decision just yet. The legal saga can be expected to go on for a few more months, with Williams intent on minimizing the amount of time she spends in prison.
