Donald Trump opposed the protection for the LGBTQ community in the past
Back in 2019, a senior administration official stated that the politician was not in support of the Equality Act in the United States, which prevented any kind of discrimination towards everyone, including the LGBTQ. While speaking to the Washington Blade, the official stated that Trump's administration supports “equal treatment” and added:
“This bill in its current form is filled with poison pills that threaten to undermine parental and conscience rights.”
The news also led to criticism of Donald from different personalities, including the President of the Human Rights Campaign, Chad Griffin.
Griffin stated that he was not surprised by the reaction, adding that Trump was trying to ensure that the LGBTQ community remains in danger of not getting the basic facilities. He continued:
“The LGBTQ community, and all Americans for that matter, deserve a president with the courage and decency to sign this bill into law, and we will continue the urgent work to pass the Equality Act and replace Donald Trump with a pro-equality president who will sign it into law.”
However, Trump has also supported LGBTQ on a few occasions. While speaking to The Advocate in 2000, he said that he supports the amendment of the 1964 Civil Rights Act to stop the “discrimination based on s*xual orientation.”
Donald also spoke up on whether he would employ a gay person in his administration:
“I would want the best and brightest. Sexual orientation would be meaningless. I’m looking for brains and experience. If the best person for the job happens to be gay, I would certainly appoint them.”
Trump is participating in the upcoming presidential election, competing against Kamala Harris. The polls have disclosed that Harris is currently ahead of Trump after their television debate was watched by around 67 million people, as per BBC.
