Elon Musk unveiled a prototype of a Tesla robo-taxi, the CyberCab and a Robovan at the "We, Robot" event at the Warner Bros. studio in Burbank, California on October 11. The entrepreneur said that he wishes to release the self-driving vehicles before 2027. Netizens have since taken to social media to react to the Robovan.
Elon Musk unveiled the futuristic Robovan at the event. The vehicle could transport up to 20 people at a time. It carried no steering wheel or pedals. It was also revealed that the car could be converted to carry goods. Musk did not mention any production timeline for the release of the vehicle, whose frame is being hilariously compared to a toaster.
Money Control reported the Robovan as a transport system that can deliver “autonomous deliveries” and could streamline “logistics, and cut down on operational costs for last-mile deliveries.”
According to Musk, the Robovan is expected to rely solely on AI and cameras, and it would not require any hardware that current Robotaxi rivals are using. The taxi can also be charged wirelessly. Musk stated that they would use inductive technology, which is “10 to 20 times safer” than regular cars driven by humans.
X page @PopBase shared a video of the Robovan prototype being announced publicly. The vehicle glided smoothly through the street, with numerous people getting out of the car. Attendees of the event were heard gasping in surprise when the Robovan was unveiled.
Several netizens took to social media to share their hilarious reactions to the Robovan. One netizen said:
Others remarked about the unconventional design of the car:
“Why does he keep making the most ugly things possible,” an X user said.
“This is giving a train without the tracks,” another platform user said.
“This reminds me of that car from the simpsons road rage game,” an internet user said.
Several internet users compared the car's design to a toaster and a computer mouse.
“That looks like a toaster on wheels,” an X user said.
“It looks like a computer mouse,” another platform user said.
This is not the first time Elon Musk has promised wild innovations with a limited timeline. He first promised in 2016 that automated cars were just two years away. Meanwhile, other reactions read:
“If i saw this at a red light i would serve,” an X user said.
“The laugh I would let out if I saw this on the street is crazy,” another internet user said.
More about Elon Musk’s Robotaxis as Robovan video goes viral online
Tesla’s Robotaxi featured two gull-wing doors and no steering wheels or foot pedals. At the "We, Robot event," Musk said:
“You’re just sitting in a comfortable little lounge and you can do whatever you want while you’re in this comfortable little lounge, and when you get out, you will be at your destination.”
Elon Musk also mentioned that the Robotaxis would be priced below $30,000.
Speaking about the event and Musk’s innovation, Dennis Dick, an equity trader from Triple D Trading, said in a statement to Reuters:
“Everything looks cool, but not much in terms of time lines, I’m a shareholder and pretty disappointed. I think the market wanted more definitive timelines.”
The event came after Tesla’s shares dipped about 1% to $238.77.
Meanwhile, as per the BBC, Elon Musk's Tesla has been facing phantom braking problems, and the same is being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The organization revealed that since 2021, there have been 1,399 Tesla crashes, resulting in 31 fatalities.
