Disney+ announced on January 20, 2023, that it would be removing the documentary film Howard from its platform on February 1, 2023. The film's removal from Disney+ was met with criticism from fans and critics alike, with many accusing Disney of censorship and of trying to erase Ashman's legacy.

Disney+ reversed the decision on May 26, 2023. The company said in a statement that they had "received feedback from our subscribers and have decided to keep Howard on the platform."

The reversal comes after a wave of backlash, including claims of Disney trying to erase Ashman's legacy. Many also pointed out that the removal Disney+ was particularly insensitive given that it came during Pride Month. Following the platform's reversal announcement, one Twitter user wrote:

The documentary, which was released in 2019, tells the story of Ashman's life and career, and his contributions to Disney animation. Ashman was a lyricist who wrote the songs for some of Disney's most beloved animated films, including The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin.

The film had been available on Disney+ since its launch in November 2019. Many were thus disappointed about Disney's decision, including the movie's director, Don Hahn, who wrote in a statement:

"I'm deeply saddened that Disney+ has decided to remove Howard from its platform. This film is a labor of love and it's been a source of comfort and inspiration for so many people. I hope that Disney will reconsider its decision and make Howard available to its subscribers once again."

After such an incident with the director itself, the clamor to bring back the film intensified, resulting in the decision reversal.

Those who were against the film being removed soon took to the internet to celebrate.

Disney has not given a specific reason for removing documentaries like Howard from Disney+. However, fan speculation has come up with varying theories, including one that suggests that the removal is a means of censorship and an attempt to remove any content that takes a critical look at Disney's past.

Many fans have also pointed out that the removal of the documentary comes at a time when Disney is about to release a live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, a film, that Ashman was heavily involved in.

Disney has not commented on the decision to remove the documentary, but some have speculated that it may be due to licensing issues. However, others believe that the removal is simply a way for Disney to distance itself from Ashman's legacy.
