Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and his rival, Ohio Senator JD Vance, are set to face off in their first vice-presidential debate on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. This will be the only parley between the two vice presidential nominees ahead of the elections in November.
CBS Broadcast Center in New York City will host the debate with anchors Norah O'Donnell and Margaret Brennan moderating. Just like the face-off between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump on September 10, it will run 90- minutes and there will be no audience.
Internet users were quick to comment under the reminder of the debate posted by @PopCrave on X, with one calling it the "Coach vs Couch" debate.
While many expressed their interest in watching the debate, a few commenters pointed out that in the wake of Hurricane Helene, many were still left without power and would not be able to watch. Here are some comments seen on X:
"I'm so hyped you don't understand," another reacted.
"and millions of people won’t be able to watch bc most of southern appalachia still does not have power!!!" kiwi expressed.
"Why are debates in the US always like Santa Claus vs The Military guy that wants to nuke the aliens at the beginning of the movie," one user remarked.
Others pointed out their disinterest in watching the debate.
"Can’t emphasize enough how much I do not care," @karennashleyy added.
"respectfully this gon be worse than the one we just saw," an X user stated.
"Donttttttt careeee would rather have a dancing with the stars episode," one commented.
There will be no muted microphones during the Tim Walz vs. JD Vance debate
Before Kamala Harris announced Tim Walz as her choice for running mate, the latter remained unknown beyond the political circles in Minnesota. Trump's lieutenant, JD Vance, author of Hillbilly Elegy, was elected to the Senate in 2022.
Per a report published by CBS News, the 90-minute debate will feature two 4-minute commercial breaks. The moderators will introduce the two candidates, starting with Tim Walz. There would be no opening statements.
Like Harris and Trump's face-off, both will get two minutes to answer a question and two minutes to respond. A minute will be given for rebuttal, and at the moderator's discretion, an additional minute may be given to continue the discussion. Neither candidate is allowed to carry pre-written notes or props.
Unlike the September presidential debate, the microphones of both candidates will not be muted when their opponent will be speaking. However, per the CBS News announcement, they
"reserve the right to turn off the microphones."
JD Vance won a virtual coin toss on Thursday, electing to go second for his closing statement. To be noted, each VP nominee will get two minutes for their respective closing remarks.
Some of the important contending points this election, namely abortion rights, reproductive health care, and views of family, would feature heavily on Tuesday. Tim Walz has been open about he and his wife taking fertility treatments to have their daughter.
While, Trump and Vance, have supported the abortion ban, they have fluctuating views on their stances, including whether Trump would veto a federal abortion ban legislation if it landed on his desk as president.
The Tim Walz vs. JD Vance debate will air on CBS and affiliate networks, starting at 8:00 p.m. ET. Additionally, it can be streamed for free on various platforms with CBS News, including Paramount+ and YouTube.
