After winning the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump has been named TIME's Person of the Year 2024. The announcement of the same was made on Thursday, December 12. Trump had previously received the same title after winning the 2016 presidential election.
Talking to the outlet about his win this year, Trump said:
"We hit the nerve of the country. The country was angry."
The title of TIME's Person of the Year usually goes to the individual who had a significant impact on the events that transpired that particular year. However, the internet seemed divided regarding the incoming president's selection as the person of the year.
Netizens flooded the social media platforms with their take on the same. A user wrote:
"Damage control."
Another user tweeted:
"Greatest political comeback ever."
"It's about damn time!!! Thank you, Time. You got this one right," commented another one.
"Time to Make America Great Again. It's already started and we're just getting warmed up," added a tweet.
While many celebrated the decision of making the Republican candidate the Person of the Year, others had a different perspective. A user wrote on X:
"We had better people but decided to go with the convicted felon? Time is a joke."
"I’m shocked your magazine honored Donald Trump, because Donald Trump never did anything honorable," read a tweet.
"I don’t know how to tell you this but the relevancy of Time Magazine is over and has been for a long time," explained a netizen.
Donald Trump had previously criticized TIME magazine
As per Politico, while the President-elect has been selected as the Person of the Year by TIME magazine, he had previously criticized them. In 2013, he called them out for their choice of influential people of the year and described it as "a joke and stunt of a magazine that will, like Newsweek, soon be dead. Bad list!" In 2015, he complained that he was not considered for the magazine cover.
However, Politico reported that Trump has been on the cover of TIME magazine thrice this year. He further said:
"It means a lot, especially me growing up reading Time magazine. And, you know, it’s a very important magazine."
Before choosing the president-elect, TIME magazine considered other names, including vice-president Kamala Harris, the Princess of Wales, and billionaire Elon Musk. While describing the incoming President, the outlet stated:
"He has reshaped the American electorate, activating young male voters who propelled him to a decisive victory that saw him win the popular vote for the first time and turn every swing state red."
Some previous winners who had made it to the cover of this magazine were Greta Thunberg, former President Barack Obama, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Pope Francis, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
TIME magazine has further named NBA star Caitlin Clark as Athlete of the Year and Elton John the Icon of the Year. Lisa Su of Advanced Micro Devices has further become CEO of the Year.
