Amid criticism of the opening performance of the Paris Olympics, the internet reacted to a recently resurfaced photo of The Sopranos' The Last Supper. This occurred after the opening ceremony act, which allegedly parodied The Last Supper, went viral.

During the performance, a group of drag queens impersonated the scene in which Jesus Christ had his last meal with his followers before his crucifixion. Once videos and photos from the performance went public, social media users took to X to express their mixed opinions.

Some supported the outrage, while others noted that when The Simpsons or The Sopranos did something similar, no one criticized it. Some even took to X to make fun of the whole performance. One X user reacted to the surfaced image:

“Definitely better than the Olympics.”

Several others shared similar sentiments online:

“100%,” one X user said.
“Da Vinci's was ok but....,” another person commented.
“And they have the best fabrics!” one X user jokingly said.

Several others reacted to the surfaced The Sopranos Last Supper photo:

“Everyone is welcome at Jesus/Tony’s’ table,” said another one.
“Amen to that,” another X user wrote.
“That French one is a f*ckin’ stagmire,” one X user said.

More about surfaced The Sopranos' Last Supper photo

At the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Friday, July 27, a group of drag queens and dancers appeared to perform a "parody of the Last Supper," which drew harsh criticism on social media.

While some argued that nobody had the right to make fun of God, others ridiculed the outrage, noting that nobody seemed to care when The Sopranos did the same.

In their 2020 episode, The Sopranos recreated the Last Supper. Federico Castelluccio, Vincent Pastore, Vincent Curatola, and Arthur J. participated in a discussion on the show and its influence on television.

As they shared memories of the show, they gathered for a small meal with the important members of the cast. The scene was shot in Il Cortile, an Italian restaurant where cast members would go for supper after their character was killed off in the show.

Captured by the renowned Annie Leibovitz, this New Jersey crime family portrait was made public shortly before the second season of the show. The photo portrays Tony's family on his right, while his other family on his left perfectly balances the two halves of his existence.

However, neither the actors nor the Paris Olympics organizers acknowledged that they were reenacting The Last Supper. Nevertheless, the Paris 2024 organizers apologized to the Catholics and other Christian groups over the outage.

This apology was prompted by the Catholic Church's disapproval of the scene, for which the organizers explained that the choice was made to promote "community tolerance." Thomas Jolly, the creative director of the Olympic opening ceremony, also stated in a news conference that he wanted to discuss diversity rather than be provocative, mock, or shock people.
