A video of Barack Obama and Donald Trump allegedly getting into an altercation at former President Jimmy Carter's funeral on January 9 went viral on X. The video, uploaded to X by @xerias_x, gained over 3.5 million views at the time of this article.
In the clip, Obama and Trump are seen talking to each other before throwing punches. While the two were spotted chatting at the funeral, they did not engage in a fistfight. The viral video appears to be AI-generated, as proven by the many distortions in it, such as the blurring and overlapping of their hands.
During Jimmy Carter's funeral in Washington, Donald Trump greeted his former Vice President, Mike Pence, and former President, Barack Obama. They were seated in the second row along with Bill and Hillary Clinton and George Bush. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were seated in the first row with their respective spouses.
"It did look very friendly" — Donald Trump about his chat with Obama
President-elect Donald Trump later discussed his viral moment with former President Barack Obama, where the two were seen chatting and laughing during Jimmy Carter's funeral. During an interview with Fox News after the funeral, Trump conceded that they looked to be on "very friendly" terms.
“It did look very friendly, I must say. I didn’t realize how friendly it looked. I saw it on your wonderful network, just a little while ago before I came in and I said 'Boy, they look like two people that like each other.' And we probably do,” he said.
While the President-elect declined to reveal what they spoke about, he added the two got along despite having "different philosophies." He also said they had met backstage before the service began.
Following the viral clip, netizens speculated what the former president and president-elect said to each other during the funeral. In an exclusive report published by The New York Post on January 9, forensic lip reader Jeremy Freeman alleged Trump told the former president they had to "find a quiet place" to discuss "a matter of importance" after the service.
“I can’t talk, we have to find a quiet place sometime. This is a matter of importance and we need to do this outside so that we can deal with it, certainly, today,” Trump allegedly said.
While it is unclear what they wanted to discuss, the lip reader alleged that Obama said, “listen to me, it’s a chore, a chore,” with the President-elect replying:
“Yeah, right. I can’t think of anything that’s a chore.”
Barack Obama and Donald Trump have not always been on friendly terms. Trump was one of the more prominent figures who questioned the former president's place of birth, alleging he was born in Kenya and not Hawaii.
Following this, the former president released his birth certificate to prove he was a US citizen by birth. This was a contentious point during the 2012 election, as the US Constitution states that a presidential candidate must "be a natural-born citizen of the United States."
The former president also recently criticized Trump during an election rally in Arizona in October 2024. He referred to Trump as “a 78-year-old billionaire who has not stopped complaining about his problems since he rode down that golden escalator nine years ago.” However, he and his wife, Michelle, congratulated Trump for winning the election.
