Social media platforms have been abuzz with claims that Elon Musk, CEO of X, altered the platform's like button in response to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's resignation.

On January 6, 2025, following the news of Trudeau's resignation, several X users speculated that Elon Musk had deliberately changed the like button on the platform to celebrate this event. These users claimed the modified like button was operational in Canada.

"Elon Musk changed the like🩵💗 button as Justin Trudeau. Resign, it's workin Canada is happy," one commented.
"Elon Musk changed the like 💙💖 button to 'Justin Trudeau Resign.' It's working – Canada is happy!" one more on X.
"Elon Musk changed the like button as Justin Trudeau Resign,,,, it's working Now Canada is happy," another commented.

However, these claims are entirely false. This misinformation has been debunked and verified by Community Notes on X, which aims to create a better-informed world by empowering users.

Community Notes confirmed that Elon Musk did not change the like button or make any alterations to the X platform in response to Trudeau's resignation.

Elon Musk did not change like button on X to celebrate Justin Trudeau's resignation

As mentioned, on January 6, 2025, some users on X suggested that when liking any post in Canada, the like button would change to display the United States flag. However, this claim is false.

Firstly, the logic behind these claims is flawed. Trudeau's resignation occurred in Canada, making it illogical for the like button to display the United States flag.

The videos and images circulating on X are actually from the U.S. presidential elections held on November 5, 2024, when Donald Trump won and Musk temporarily changed the like button to show the U.S. flag.

Additionally, Community Notes on X have debunked these viral tweets, pointing out that the user is "attempting to deceive others" for the sake of likes and engagement.

"There has not been a new like animation in anticipation of Trudeau's resignation. This user is attempting to deceive others by engagement farming and getting others to like the post, which is against X ToS," the community notes wrote.

They also directed users to check the @Hashmojis profile for updates on all current reactions and animations.

"You can check @Hashmojis for all the current like animations," the community notes further wrote.

As of now, neither Elon Musk nor Justin Trudeau has responded to these viral claims.

Justin Trudeau resigns as Prime Minister of Canada

On Monday, during a press conference in Ottawa, Canada, Justin Trudeau announced that he would step down from his position as the leader of Canada’s ruling Liberal Party.

He stated that he would leave the role once a new leader is selected, with the process expected to occur following the March 2025 elections.

"I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its new leader," Trudeau said.

Trudeau further discussed the electoral process in Canada, expressing his wish for a system that would allow Canadians to choose a second or third option on the ballot.

"If I have one regret, particularly as we approach this election — well, probably many regrets that I will think of. But I do wish we’d been able to change the way we elect our governments in this country so that people could simply choose a second choice, or a third choice on the same ballot," Trudeau added.

Justin Trudeau served as Canada's prime minister for nine years, having been appointed in 2015. He is the 23rd Prime Minister of Canada.

No additional reasoning for his resignation has been provided. According to CNN, Canada’s parliament will be suspended until March 2025.
