Social media users were left divided over the McDonald's employee, who helped catch Luigi Mangione potentially getting the reward money. 26-year-old Luigi Mangione was arrested in regards to the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Monday, December 9. He was arrested after the police were tipped off by an Altoona, Pennsylvania McDonald's employee.

The five-day manhunt for the suspect's whereabouts saw the NYPD offer citizens a $10,000 reward, with the FBI later chiming in with an additional $50,000. However, it is important to note that this reward will not be disbursed simply for the arrest.

The suspect would have to be convicted as well. A trial date has to be set, leading to an indictment or conviction before any rewards can be distributed.

Social media users had mixed responses when it came to the reward potentially going to the McDonald's employee. One X user who went by @becca_oneal asked:

"the mcdonald's employee who snitched... did you get a raise? paid time off? HEALTH INSURANCE? good luck getting the reward money from the nypd"

Similar reactions followed as social media users criticized the employee for tipping off Luigi Mangione's whereabouts. Some users thought that the reward was never going to be given while others even outright felt like the person shouldn't get the reward. Here are a few X reactions to the situation:

"Yes she should have been cleaning that damn ice cream machine not worrying about other peoples business," one X user said.
"They’re gonna be like weellllllll you see we don’t have the money we had to use it to send our dance team to finals," another netizen said.
"As someone who worked at McDonald's for 3 years, the employee doesn't represent our values here at the Archs. We will take the reward money for ourselves and give the crew member a promotion to training manager, where they will earn that 10k over a 10 year period," another user said.

However, other users felt that the employee deserved the reward for doing a "good deed". Many questioned why others had a problem with this.

"How about the reward of just doing a good deed?" asked one X user.
"So someone noticed a suspect in a national news murder and you have a problem that the person let the police know?" asked another user.
"the FBI and NYPD should give that reward $$ to the McDonald's employee who did a great job of noticing the suspect and then alerting law enforcement. People should be rewarded for this. Ordinary people play a key role in helping law enforcement keep our society safe," said another netizen.
"I don’t think yall understand that the award was $50k and no McDonald’s employee turning that down," another user said.

The person who tipped off Luigi Mangione's whereabouts can potentially receive reward money from the NYPD and the FBI

According to court documents obtained by Fox News, Luigi Mangione was seated on the back of an Altoona, Pennsylvania, McDonald's on Monday morning, December 9. The suspect was sporting a blue medical mask and looking at a laptop computer while at the restaurant.

A customer and employee recognized Mangione and the employee tipped off the authorities. One of the officers at Monday's press conference claimed that Luigi Mangione became silent and started shaking when asked if he had recently been to New York.

He was also found to be in possession of a 3-D printed gun, a 3-D printed silencer, fake IDs, similar clothes as the shooter, and a document detailing his disdain of corporate America.

According to a USA Today report on December 9, the McDonald's employee who provided the tip-off on Luigi Mangione would have to be nominated for the $50,000 FBI reward via an involved agency before getting it reviewed and approved through an interagency committee. The decision is then referred to the Secretary of State.

If approved by the Secretary of State, there will be a determination of the amount of money, the information provided by the employee was worth. This does not guarantee that the employee will receive the full $50,000. They can receive an amount up to $50,000.

This depends on multiple factors including the value of the information, the severity of the danger to American people or property mitigated by the threat, the level of threat mitigated by the information, the risk faced by the person, and the person's cooperation levels.

As for the $10,000 NYPD reward, tipsters contact the Crime Stoppers program anonymously via call or the Internet to provide information and get a unique identification number. Tipsters will have to check the status of the case online via the identification number to check the status of the case.

If the reward is approved by the Crime Stoppers Board of Directors or the New York City Police Foundation, tipsters will receive instructions on how to access it. As mentioned earlier, both these rewards require an indictment or conviction.
