Former US President Jimmy Carter passed away on December 29, 2024, and his funeral was attended by several politicians, including Joe Biden, Donald Trump, and Kamala Harris.
Several other dignitaries further paid respect to Carter. Meanwhile, a video of Trump went viral, in which he could be seen walking up to the casket with his wife, Melania Trump, to pay respect. During this time, netizens reportedly heard the YMCA ringtone being played.
Many wondered and assumed that Trump's cellphone actually played the YMCA ringtone while he paid respect to Jimmy Carter. One such clip even received over a million views after it was shared on January 9. The X post came with a caption that read:
"I FORGOT TO PUT IT ON VIBRATE."
However, the video was altered, and the music was seemingly added later. C-SPAN shared a video capturing the same footage on their official X account. In the clip, President-elect Trump and Melania could be seen paying respect, and no ringtone could be heard.
The viral video, thus, is not real. The incoming president's phone did not ring at the time.
The funeral happened at the National Cathedral on Thursday, which further was marked as a day of mourning by Biden. According to Forbes, this meant that flags would stay half-staff till the month's end. The outlet also reported that most federal agencies and the New York Stock Exchange are shut down.
Several dignitaries delivered eulogies while paying respect to former President Jimmy Carter
Many presented eulogies to honor the late president's life. This included President Joe Biden and former Vice President Walter Mondale, whose posthumous eulogy was read by his son Ted.
Mondale, who passed away in 2021, reportedly wrote the eulogy back in 2015, the same year when Carter announced being diagnosed with brain cancer. Ted Mondale read the eulogy, which mentioned how Carter faced certain issues during his tenure as president. It read:
"The most was climate change. Yeah, I mean Carter staked his presidency on environmental regulation, on deregulation of industries, on conservation."
Walter Mondale also wrote about his dynamics with Carter: "unlike a lot of vice presidents and their presidents, our relationship did not blow up." The former VP further wrote:
"One of the things that dawned on me during the course of our time together in the White House is how well we seemed to work together and how we seemed to understand each other."
Joe Biden also read his eulogy to pay respect to the late president. He primarily focused on Jimmy Carter's character and faith. Biden repeatedly praised Carter's character and even recalled being the first senator to endorse Carter's presidential bid. He concluded by stating how much he missed his friend Carter.
Former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton also attended the funeral on Thursday.
