Warner Bros Pictures dropped the debut trailer for The Color Purple recently. Touted as a “bold new take on the beloved classic,” the upcoming musical has been taken from Alice Walker’s epistolary novel. It stars Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, and Halle Bailey, among others.
As soon as Discussing Film dropped the promotional clip, social media users were left in awe of Bailey, who is playing the pivotal character of a young Nettie Harris.
This is her second musical of the year after The Little Mermaid, slated to premiere this Friday, May 26.
Her appearance in The Color Purple compelled one user to say that she's the next “EGOT” (i.e. a recipient of an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony).
Ghanaian artist Blitz Bazawule is at the helm of the upcoming The Color Purple. Before this, ace director Steven Spielberg adapted the 1982 published piece for a celluloid version in 1985.
Spielberg is attached to the 2023 movie as a co-producer. Interestingly, Oprah Winfrey, who portrayed an important character in his version is bankrolling the new launch as well.
''On fire right now'': Fans laud Halle Bailey as The Color Purple trailer drops
The Color Purple is slated to release on December 25, 2023. To kick start the marketing around the same, its distributor Warner Bros. recently dropped the first trailer. Lasting 2:24 minutes, it starts with establishing the close bond between sisters Nettie (Halle Bailey) and Celie Harris Johnson (Phylicia Mpasi).
Without wasting time, the clip creates the premise of the coming-of-age drama, which is the life of African American women in the early 1900s. If the original novel and Spielberg’s film is anything to go by, Bailey’s character is crucial, but she isn’t one of the main ones.
However, the trailer has ample footage of Bailey, leaving her fans elated. They took to Twitter to hail the young actress’ acting in the promotional clip.
Bailey and Mpasi aside, viewers will also get to see Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, Barrino as adult Celie Harris Johnson, and Brooks as Sofia. Further, Colman Domingo as Albert "Mister" Johnson gets featured in the official trailer.
A powerful version of Cynthia Erivo’s I'm Here from Oprah Winfrey Presents: The Color Purple, A New Musical (Original Broadway) as the background score amplifies the lasting effect of the trailer. The 2005-2008 Tony Award-winning musical was backed by Scott Sanders and Oprah Winfrey. Like Winfrey, Sanders is financing the forthcoming period drama too.
Quincy Jones, who produced and scored the music in the previous iteration, is back as a producer in this new take.
The Color Purple is slated to release on December 25, 2023.
