After an extensive manhunt, Luigi Mangione, the suspected shooter who allegedly killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan on December 4, has been arrested. NYC Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed on Monday, December 9, in a press conference that the police had Mangione in custody for gun possession.
His extradition hearing was scheduled on Tuesday, December 10, and Mangione arrived at the Blaire County courtroom, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, with his hands and feet shackled. As uniformed officers escorted him from the sheriff's vehicle to the courthouse for the extradition hearing, Luigi Mangione reportedly shouted at the onlookers.
"It's completely out of touch! It's an insult to the intelligence of the American people and their lived experience!" he said.
That said, comments on the video pointed out that Mangione said "completely unjust" and not "completely out of touch." While it wasn't clear what Mangione was referencing, his outburst was caught on camera and circulated all over social media. The video received varying opinions from netizens online. A Reddit user, @lunaappaloosa, said that the information revealed so far "feels historic."
"I am in disbelief that it's possible for a true monoculture Hero to arise like this in the 21st century. Every piece of new info feels historic."
After seeing the video online, other netizens pointed out how the cops were being "rough" on Mangione as he looked back and yelled at the onlookers.
"Why are officers rough with him? He's not resisting, he's just shouting his opinion. No need to shove him," a Reddit user commented.
"Let my boi speak! He obviously has some very important things to say. What are the authorities so afraid of?," another Reddit user said.
"These cops are being so rough with him. LET HIM SPEAK," a user on Reddit added.
Meanwhile, the latest Luigi Mangione video further ignited netizens to question information about the case, with others speculating that Mangione is the fall guy.
"This does not add up. The killer supposedly did everything to hide his identity and get away....then a few days later gets caught sitting in a McDonalds with the murder weapon, a manifesto, and the fake id that was used at the hostel. That easy?," a user on X pointed out.
"Is he referring to how hard the cops are trying to make people believe he's the guy?," another X user commented.
Luigi Mangione is charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, among other charges
Luigi Mangione was in court on Monday, December 9, for a preliminary arraignment on gun charges, after he was arrested at a McDonalds in Altoona, Pennsylvania, a day before. Per CTV news, the criminal complaint released on Monday charged Mangione with five counts.
It includes a felony count of forgery, another one for carrying an unlicensed firearm, a count of misdemeanor for tampering with identification, and another misdemeanor count of carrying a crime instrument. He also got a third misdemeanor charge for using false identification to authorities.
Meanwhile, Manhattan prosecutors filed murder charges against Luigi Mangione late on Monday, according to an online court docket via CTV News. Mangione's defense attorney, Thomas Dickey, said during the brief hearing on Tuesday that his client won't be waiving extradition, and instead wants a hearing about it. He also said to refrain from judging his client on the matter.
"You can't rush to judgment in this case or any case. He's presumed innocent. Let's not forget that," Dickey said.
Per the Associated Press, Mangione remained behind bars in Pennsylvania for his possession of an unlicensed firearm and forgery charges. Meanwhile, Manhattan prosecutors are starting to take steps to bring Mangione to New York, where he's charged with killing Thompson.
