Recently, videos purportedly showing former U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris dancing on the iconic TV show Soul Train have gone viral. This has captivated audiences and sparked widespread debate across social media platforms. These videos and claims, however, are entirely false.
Soul Train is an American music variety television show that first aired on October 2, 1971, on local network WCIU-TV. With 39 seasons, it is one of the longest-running syndicated programs in American television history.
The show primarily featured performances by R&B, soul, and hip-hop artists. Its final episode was aired on March 25, 2006, on Syndication.
The videos of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris dancing on Soul Train are not real
On July 30, 2024, videos circulated on TikTok, claiming Trump and Kamala in two separate videos from their younger days, on the sets of Soul Train dancing goofily and moving on beats.
Moreover, the videos falsely show Kamala Harris wearing loose black jeans, a haltered loose top, a black inner, a black choker, and a white headband. The video clip's caption reads:
"A young Kamala dancing on Soul Train," one video on TikTok claims.
While the video claiming Harris in it was not altered, the woman shown in the video did not resemble the Vice President by any means. Additionally, the unidentified woman had a neck-length haircut, whereas Harris has consistently maintained shoulder-length hair.
Another notable point that disproves the videos and claims is the presence of Mariah Carey's 2005 hit song It's Like That. This suggests the video was shot between 2005 and 2006. During this period, Kamala Harris served as San Francisco's first female district attorney, a position she held from 2004 to 2010.
Given her high-profile status, no records or reports of Harris appearing on Soul Train exist.
Meanwhile, the video falsely showed former President Donald Trump as a young man in a rose gold two-piece suit paired with a white shirt and maroon tie. He moved to the beat with solid white formal shoes and mullet blonde hair.
One video shared on TikTok on July 12, 2024, garnered significant attention with over one million views. Before this video, many of the same video clips were shared on Instagram and Facebook, and the music was altered. The videos were captioned:
"Donald Trump when he danced on Soul Train."
One instance that disproves the claims of Donald Trump being in the video occurred on September 11, 2024, when a user on X, @ChaseNCashe, shared the same clip. The user did not mention Trump but instead wrote a humorous caption:
"When your real name is Jared but you put Jerome on the paper so you could sneak in cuz you always wanted to dance on the Soul Train line," the user captioned.
Another notable point that refutes the claims is that the original video clip, as per Fandom, is from episode number 25 from the 16th season, which appeared on May 2, 1987. Also, the original video shows a song from Nona Hendryx's album Female Trouble, Why Should I Cry, released on January 1, 1987.
According to Snopes, a detailed search of Getty Images from 1985 to 1987 revealed that former President Donald Trump did not have the same hair length as the individual depicted in the video.
Furthermore, the images confirm that Trump was never as lean as the man shown in the clips. These discrepancies in physical appearance further invalidate the claims that the person in the video is Donald Trump.
Moreover, the viral videos came after Joe Biden withdrew from the race for re-election for the presidential position and endorsed Kamala Harris to the position instead on July 21, 2024. Also, they came after the alleged attack on Donald Trump on July 13, 2024.
President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have not addressed the viral videos.
The presidential elections are to be held on November 5, 2024.
