On July 28, 2024, a nonsensical quote from Vice President Kamala Harris allegedly talking about the Olympics popped up on social media in the middle of her presidential campaign and the 2024 Paris Olympics.
"Today, we celebrate the Olympics. Because Olympians are Olympic, & they are at the Olympics being Olympian, so it's more important now than ever to support their Olympianism," the quote read.
As the quote gained traction online, many fact-checking websites like AFP Fact Check and Snopes.com confirmed that Kamala Harris did not say the quote. Ammar Moussa, her Director of Rapid Response, also confirmed the quote was a fake via an email to AFP on July 30.
"This is very clearly fake," the email read.
A fake tweet of Kamala Harris praising the controversial Olympics opening ceremony circulated online
Kamala Harris faced immense public scrutiny since President Joe Biden stepped down from the 2024 elections and endorsed her as the Democratic nominee against former president Donald Trump. Several Trump supporters have taken to discrediting her online, spreading fake tweets and videos.
One such tweet included a screenshot of Harris allegedly praising the controversial opening ceremony during the 2024 Paris Olympics. The controversy stemmed from a tableau of drag queens that many thought was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's 'The Last Supper.' The opening ceremony was met with outrage with many online claiming it mocked Christianity.
The fake screenshot was posted on X by user @bringon2024 on July 27.
According to NewsChecker, the screenshot was declared doctored, as the tweet did not exist on Harris's official X page. Vice President Harris has not posted anything regarding the ongoing Olympics since it began on July 28.
Kamala Harris called for a debate with Donald Trump
Kamala Harris spoke to a crowd of 10,000 people who gathered at the Georgia State Convocation Center in Atlanta, Georgia on July 30 to lend their support to the Democratic nominee. Harris declared her interest in having a debate with Trump during her speech.
“Well, Donald, I do hope you’ll reconsider to meet me on the debate stage. Because as the saying goes, if you’ve got something to say, say it to my face,” she said.
In an interview with Fox News on July 29, Donald Trump said he would "probably" debate Harris but he “can also make a case for not doing it.” In an earlier post on X, he added he would face Harris during the September 10 debate only if it was held on Fox News and not ABC, which he dubbed "biased."
Harris's Atlanta rally was attended by rapper Quavo, who gave a speech about gun control and teaming up with the Vice President to tackle the rising gun violence in the US. Rapper Megan Thee Stallion also performed at the rally, wearing a blue suit while she rapped her latest hits.
Kamala Harris ended her speech with a rallying soundbite to the people of Georgia, saying:
“Georgia, I ask you, are you ready to get to work? Do we believe in freedom? Do we believe in opportunity? Do we believe in the promise of America? And are we ready to fight for it? And when we fight, we win.”
The 2024 US presidential election is scheduled for November 5, 2024.
