Residents of Florida prepare for Hurricane Milton to land on the Tampa coast on the night of October 9, 2024. The National Hurricane Center marked the hurricane as a Category 4 storm, urging people to evacuate immediately.

Amid weather reports, an image of Hurricane Milton has been making waves on social media after its shape was compared to the 2016 Hurricane Matthew. The entertainment page DramaAlert took to X to post a side-by-side comparison image of the two hurricanes, with the caption "It's returning."

Hurricane Milton predicted to bring flash floods

According to BBC, Hurricane Milton is expected to land near the city of Tampa, Florida, at around 2 am local time. The storm is expected to be the worst this century, predicted to bring high-speed winds, flash floods, and torrential rain. The Category 4 storm has sustained winds of 155 mph and is expected to bring 6 to 12 inches of rain in central and northern parts of Florida.

"On the forecast track, the center of Milton will move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico today, make landfall along the west-central coast of Florida late tonight or early Thursday morning, and move off the east coast of Florida over the western Atlantic Ocean Thursday afternoon," the National Hurrican Center said.

Hurricane Milton is expected to weaken before landfall, downgrading to a Category 3 storm. However, the National Hurricane Center warned the storm would present an "extremely life-threatening situation" to anyone in its path.

Tampa, a city with a population of over 3 million people, has been urged to evacuate along with other towns on the Florida west coast. In an interview with CNN, Sheriff Chad Chronister predicted the storm was only going to worsen, adding:

“This is the 11th hour. If you’re in an evacuation zone, the time to get out is now. We already saw some flooding out here early this morning.”

Hurricane Milton comes two weeks after Hurricane Helene ravaged Southeast US, including Florida, between September 24 and 29. According to ABC News, at least 230 people died during the storm, making it the deadliest storm since 2005's Hurricane Katrina.
