Musician Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, recently shared her experience of evacuating Los Angeles due to the devastating wildfires that have swept through the region. In a series of tweets, she detailed the chaotic and tragic situation, while also addressing accusations against her former partner Elon Musk's stance on climate change.

On January 9, 2025, Grimes tweeted about her harrowing escape and wrote:

"Just had to evacuate, tried to go to a friend’s place / it got an evacuation warning on the way there — now aimlessly driving out of the city. Is the whole city gna be gone? This is a serious tragedy for LA — I feel profoundly sad for everybody."

As the fires raged, Grimes’ tweets became a platform for broader discussions on climate change. A follower accused Elon Musk of being "one of the most evil climate deniers of all time." Responding directly, Grimes defended Musk and wrote:

"He’s pretty vocal about climate change and is primarily known for, in part, revolutionizing electric vehicles. I think there’s plenty to be angry about, but when you stray from fact and reason, your critique loses power."

Claire Boucher emphasized the need for thoughtful, rational discussions.

"The biggest challenge right now is not falling into creating and consuming dopamine rage bait on social media and focusing on thoughtful, rational, truth-based discourse so that we can properly diagnose and solve our problems," she tweeted.

Claire Boucher and Musk, who share three children, were in a relationship from 2018 to 2022.

The wildfires began on January 7, 2025, in the Pacific Palisades area, quickly spreading across Los Angeles County. As of January 9, CNN reported that at least 10 people had died, with an estimated 10,000 homes and structures destroyed.

By January 10, approximately 180,000 residents were under evacuation orders or warnings, as fires continued to threaten areas like Hollywood Hills, Pasadena, and Calabasas.

Grimes’ tweets also reflected her concerns for global climate issues, sympathizing with "billions of climate [refugees] from less wealthy areas of the world" and likening the crisis to "a weird invisible hand poking the dominoes."

Elon Musk has been a polarizing figure in climate discourse. While some praise his efforts to combat climate change by promoting electric cars, others criticize his business practices and public statements.

As of January 11, 2025, Los Angeles is grappling with devastating wildfires that have caused significant loss of life and property. The two largest fires, the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire have collectively burned over 35,000 acres, destroying thousands of homes and structures.

According to BBC, the causes of the original LA wildfires fires are not yet known. In the USA, lightning is considered the most common source of wildfires, as per the National Fire Protection Association. However, lightning has been ruled out in the case of LA county fires as there were no reports of lighting in Palisades and Eaton. Wildfires are also intentionally set or ignited by sparks in utility lines.
