Actor, singer, producer, director, and activist Tony Goldwyn headlined the Democratic National Convention (DNC) 2024 on Monday, August 19, where she endorsed Kamala Harris for the upcoming presidential election. The 64-year-old began by introducing the current Vice President and drew comparisons between her and her Republican opponent Donald Trump.
“She has a message for us. It is a message that’s joyful, not mean-spirited. A message of public service, not self-service. A message of optimism and opportunity, not chaos and division. It’s a message that has woken us up to who we are, to who we always were,” Tony Goldwyn shared.
The actor, who himself played the role of the American President in the ABC series Scandal, further stated that Americans should support Kamala Harris because they were not cynical or small-minded.
Tony Goldwyn called this a “new chapter” in American history, adding that under Harris’ leadership, people could “dream” as much as they wanted.
In the wake of his speech at the DNC 2024, the internet is having diverse reactions. For instance, X user @DukesMama2 posted a GIF featuring Aisha Tyler covering her mouth out of delight and praised Goldwyn’s speech, saying that he has come a long way since playing the lead antagonist Carl Bruner in the 1990 fantasy thriller film Ghost to emceeing the DNC 2024.
“Tony Goldwyn has come full circle. Since his evil days on ‘GHOST.’ He kinda cute tonight #DNCConvention2024,” the post was captioned.
Several others joined the conversation on the platform and shared similar opinions. Many compared him at the convention to his character as the U.S. President Fitzgerald “Fitz” Thomas Grant III and the former Republican Governor of California in the political thriller series Scandal.
“Oh, come on. Everybody knows that not Tony Goldwyn. That's Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III,” a person wrote.
“FITZ!!! Tony Goldwyn looks GOOD!! That man walked out & I instantly sat up straighter! #DNC #DemocraticNationalConvention,” one person wrote.
“I do love that Tony Goldwyn, he is a great Governor of California,” another person wrote.
Meanwhile, others slammed Goldwyn for trying to “relate” to the American masses.
“Famous people really know the struggle of an average American Citizen,” one netizen wrote.
“How can he relate to the average American?” another netizen wrote.
Conservatives also came forward and mocked the Law & Order actor for hosting the DNC 2024.
“Why does he lowkey sound like Obama but with Trump mannerisms,” an individual asked.
“Sit the f*ck down Fitz. Kamala is way worse than you and that says something,” another individual wrote.
Elsewhere in his speech, the Peabody Award winner asked the audience to “get off the sidelines and into the game” adding that when people fight, they win. He also declared Kamala Harris as the “next President of the United States of America.”
Notably, this is not the first time Goldwyn has endorsed a Democratic Presidential candidate. Earlier, in 2016, he supported Hillary Clinton's race to the White House.
Exploring the DNC 2024 in the wake of Tony Goldwyn’s trending speech
On the opening night of the DNC 2024 at the United Center in Chicago, which was hosted by Tony Goldwyn, several notable figures took to the stage, including President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former First Lady Hillary Clinton, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, among others.
Biden stated that Donald Trump “is going to find out the power of women in 2024,” while Mrs. Clinton said how she wanted her children and grandchildren to know that she was “here at this moment” cheering for Harris, “every step of the way.”
“This is when we break through. The future is here. Let’s go win it,” Hillary added.
Meanwhile, Kamala Harris claimed that it was going to be a “great week” and shared a heartfelt gratitude to Biden for leading the USA for the last four years.
Her speech was followed by a biographical video with Jeffrey Wright’s narration and Beyonce’s Freedom playing in the backdrop.
As for Ocasio-Cortez, she criticized Trump by saying:
“You cannot love this country if you only fight for the wealthy and big business. To love this country is to fight for all people, working people, everyday Americans.”
She also urged people not to send Harris-Walz to Washington alone, but to stand by them every step of the way.
Other than the political dignitaries, DNC 2024 inaugural night also saw appearances from performers such as singer-songwriter Jason Isabella, who sang Something More Than Free, and Texas musician Mickey Guyton who sang Ain’t We All American?. Goldwyn’s Scandal co-star Kerry Washington was also present, alongside Mindy Kaling and Ana Navarro.
