As former US president Barack Obama’s summer playlist arrived just in time for music enthusiasts, some noticed the distinct absence of Chappell Roan. The 26-year-old indie sensation had her breakthrough this year with the single Good Luck, Babe!, which secured a place on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a staple for young individuals going through 'situationships.'
Thus, Barack’s playlist, which otherwise featured other top singers this summer, including Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Beyonce, Megan Thee Stallion, and Shaboozey, stood out to some due to Chappell not making it to the famed enumeration. The former president said the playlist would not personify him if it were not "eclectic."
"I hope you find something new to listen to!," he tweeted.
While some asked why Chappell Roan was not mentioned, one X user speculated that it was "because he was afraid of another Lucy Dacus situation"
Barack added the indie rock supergroup Boygenius' track Not Strong Enough from their studio album The Record to his 2023 summer playlist. However, Lucy Dacus, one of the three group members, quote-tweeted his post and wrote "war criminal" with a 'sad face' emoticon.
Though Dacus did not elucidate the reason behind her response, some fans conjectured it could be because Barack Obama gave a green signal to drone warfare during his tenure as the president. It is deemed one of his most controversial moves. According to reports, he issued between 540 and 563 drone strikes targeting Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia, which resulted in nearly 3,797 deaths.
It cannot be concluded with certainty that Obama did not include Chappell Roan in his summer playlist to avoid being called out for one of the decisions made during his presidency. Nonetheless, several others resonated with the thought:
"First thing I thought of. I think they didn’t want a repeat of the Lucy Dacus experience," wrote one.
"He didn’t wanna be called a war criminal again," another chimed in.
"lucy dacus put the fear of god in him," said one X user.
"This is legitimately the worst thing that Obama has ever done," commented another.
Another person said Barack might have left Chappell out because she turned down the offer to perform at the White House Pride event this year.
"it has to be because she refused to play at the white house", wrote one person.
Artists mentioned on Barack Obama's 2024 summer playlist
The 63-year-old did not lie when he said "eclectic mix," as his summer playlist featured artists from various musical genres. From pop, R&B, Hip-Hop, Country, and Indie pick like Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion, GloRilla, H.E.R., Beyonce, Tyla, Rema, Charli XCX, Enny, and Dr. Dre to the timeless Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Sting — the list goes on.
Other mentions include Bad Bunny, Norah Jones, Nick Drake, Morgan Wallen, The Supremes, Shaboozey, Tommy Richman, Artemas, Saweetie, Cleo Sol, Carminho, Tems, Hope Tala, The Miracles, to name a few.
While some fans hyped over Obama vibing to Charli's Brat Summer, some noticed the visible absence of Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter from the playlist, apart from Chappell Roan.
