"If they tax us, we tax them" - Donald Trump warns India over high taxes on American goods

In a news conference in Mar-A-Lago on Monday, December 16, US President-elect Donald Trump spoke about the high tariff rates levied on American goods by countries like India and Brazil. The Republican warned that if taxes are levied on the United States, the government will reciprocate by doing the same.

“Reciprocal. If they tax us, we tax them the same amount. They tax us. We tax them. And they tax us. Almost in all cases, they're taxing us, and we haven't been taxing them," the MAGA leader said.

The former President was known for ensuring reciprocal relationships in trade deals, a hallmark of his previous presidency between 2017 and 2021. Meanwhile, India is known for its protectionist approach to trade deals and has faced backlash for its supposedly high tariffs on American goods.

During his speech on Monday, the MAGA leader named India and Brazil as two of the nations with high taxes on American goods and added:

“The word reciprocal is important because if somebody charges us—India, we don’t have to talk about our own—if India charges us 100 per cent, do we charge them nothing for the same?”

Trump's comments came a few months after he called India a "very big abuser" of taxes and a "tariff king." The former Republican president also cited specific examples like the high import charges on Harley-Davidson bicycles.

According to an analysis by The Economic Times, Donald Trump is expected to implement US-centric trade policies once he is sworn into power. This might pressure India to lower its tariff rates for US goods or in turn, face high tax rates on exports to the United States.

While the Republican administration's new policies could pose some challenges for countries like India and Brazil, they could also be beneficial in certain cases. One example quoted by the Economic Times refers to Chinese goods. If the United States raises tariffs on Chinese goods, Indian exporters could make up for it in the US market. During the Republican president's trade war with China, India benefitted due to an increased demand for Indian products as alternatives to Chinese goods.

However, the Indian IT and textile industry will be harmed the most if there are high taxes levied on Indian exports. These industries rely heavily on American customers. American companies could also stop investing in India due to this policy if India does not address the President-elect's concerns about high tariff rates.

Further details about Donald Trump's policies on foreign trade will be clearer after he is sworn to power. The Republican leader is set to be sworn in on January 20, 2025.
