A clip of Republican VP pick JD Vance getting angry at the CBS moderators for fact-checking him went viral following the vice-presidential debate on October 1, 2024. Host Margaret Brennan fact-checked Vance's claim that the Haitian immigrants living in Springfield, Ohio, entered the US illegally.
JD Vance's opponent Tim Walz quickly responded that the former's rhetoric had
“vilified a large number of people who were here legally in the community of Springfield.”
Host Margaret Brennan also supported this claim, saying that the Haitian immigrants in Springfield were granted "temporary protected status" by the government.
JD Vance responded that he was told the moderators would not be fact-checking him, saying:
“Margaret, the rules were that you were not going to fact check and since you’re fact-checking me, I think it’s important to say what’s actually going on."
The clip quickly became one of the most memorable moments of the debate. As the snippet made rounds on social media, many speculated about the Republican VP candidate's thoughts on being fact-checked, with one person tweeting:
Many wondered why JD Vance reacted the way he did during the debate, pointing out that it was illogical of him to get mad at people not allowing him to supposedly lie.
"How are you mad at someone else for you being wrong what," one person questioned.
"Getting upset because they’re not letting you LIE DURING A LIVE DEBATE????", another person added.
"“You promised I could lie without any consequences” dumb f**k," someone else commented.
"But if you are having a healthy debate then it is important to check the facts, because if there is no pressure of checking the facts then anybody can accuse anybody of anything," another netizen wrote.
However, others praised JD Vance for standing his ground and getting his point across, despite being interrupted.
"He played that so well, stood his ground, and got his point out," one person wrote.
"You guys are sooooo sour he took control of a situation where the odds are stacked against him. What happened on ABC won’t fly again this time," another person added.
"He didn’t get angry. He rightly corrected her. Stop gaslighting us," someone else commented.
Moderators cut JD Vance and Tim Walz's mics after fact-check
JD Vance took a page from his running-mate Donald Trump's book as he brought up the Haitian immigrants allegedly living illegally in Springfield, Ohio. Trump previously alleged that the Haitian immigrants were eating cats and dogs in Springfield during his presidential debate against Kamala Harris.
Trump's claim was also fact-checked during his debate, with ABC moderator David Muir adding, Springfield's city manager said there were no reports of immigrants eating pets in the city.
During the VP debate on October 1, JD Vance claimed that schools and hospitals around the US were overwhelmed because of illegal immigrants, saying:
“In Springfield, Ohio, and in communities all across this country you’ve got schools that are overwhelmed, you’ve got hospitals that are overwhelmed, you’ve got housing that is totally unaffordable because we’ve brought in millions of illegal immigrants to compete with Americans for scarce homes."
Tim Walz was quick to jump in and deemed Vance's statements were dehumanizing and vilifying other people. CBS host Margaret Brennan also fact-checked Vance's statements, against which the Republican VP candidate protested. He continued to talk about an app called CBP One, developed by the US Customs and Border Patrol services.
JD Vance claimed that illegal immigrants were using the app to seek asylum in places like Springfield. Walz retorted with a response while Vance kept talking, which ended with the moderator muting their microphones and urging them to move on to the next topic.
The vice presidential debate, which preceded the presidential election by a month, saw the candidates discuss other topics like foreign policy, the economy and abortion, among others.
