Netizens have fueled speculations on whom the Democratic Party should pick to represent them next election, suggesting California Governor Gavin Newsom as the perfect candidate. This came after Republican nominee Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election against his opponent Kamala Harris, returning to his second term as president.

Many online advocated for Newsom to lead the Democratic Party in 2028, with one X user claiming he would go "full scorched earth on Republicans."

"Gavin Newsom is my favorite pick for 2028 since he’ll just go full scorched earth on republicans. He f**king hates these people and doesn’t try to hide it."

Several netizens agreed with the sentiment, coming up with reasons why Newsom was a good pick.

"The dems need to spend the next 4 years preparing Newsom and realigning the party with working class voters again," one person tweeted.
"His name is Gavin Christopher Newsom and he is the governor of California. he has been telegraphing a run for president for like 20 years and is ready to do it in 2028. he also probably drinks the blood of infants for daily sustenance," another person added.
"We should’ve run Gavin Newsom. It’s overly clear that we’re a racist, misogynistic country. Gavin might be slimy as f**k, but he’s an extremely effective politician and he has the inherent benefit of being a white man with name recognition. I hate this current reality," another user wrote.
"It’s ok y’all it’s just 4 years. He’ll screw up majorly like he does then we’ll have the most democratic president ever Gavin Newsom," someone else commented.

However, others argued against it, claiming California was not thriving under Newsom's governance.

"We do not need gavin newsom or pete buttigieg this is not the lesson to be learned here omfg," one user tweeted.
"Gavin Newsom is trending. Dems already chattering about 2028. If you think he is the answer, 1. You learned nothing from that a** kicking last night. 2. You've never been to CA. California is a beautiful state run by inept politicians that drive business out of the state," another person added.
"Love him but he’s from California and it’s not doing so hot on the salient crime/immigration stuff. Lots can change in 4 years though," someone else commented.

Gavin Newsom vowed to "defend our Constitution" after Trump's win

On November 7, California Governor Gavin Newsom released an official statement on X after Donald Trump was declared the winner in the 2024 presidential election. He praised Kamala Harris for fighting to protect people's fundamental rights and standing up for working people and families.

He also wrote that while California would work with the incoming president, he would stand with the other states to "defend our Constitution and uphold the rule of law."

"California will seek to work with the incoming president -- but let there be no mistake, we intend to stand with states across our nation to defend our Constitution and uphold the rule of law. Federalism is the cornerstone of our democracy. It’s the United STATES of America," he wrote.

Gavin Newsom became the Californian governor in 2018. He faced several calls to be ousted from his position, which led to a recall election in 2021. He received only 38% votes that called for his recall, so he remained the governor and was re-elected in 2022. Prior to being governor, Newsom was the mayor of San Franciso between 2004 and 2011.
