Former U.S. President Donald Trump once again captured the internet's attention with a surprising moment during a recent visit to the resting place of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, or Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, in Queens, New York City.
On October 7, 2024, the former President visited the gravesite of the Lubavitcher Rebbe in Queens to pray for the hostages in Gaza, as per Jewish Insider. During the visit, Trump was handed a prayer book as a memento of the occasion. The former President then inquired whether the rabbi accompanying him would like his signature on it.
"Would you like me to sign this?" Trump asked.
As a result, reactions to the clip on X ranged from amusement to disbelief, with many expressing that Trump’s behavior was indicative of a self-centered approach to religious customs.
"In Yiddish, he’s what’s called 'a putz,'” one wrote on X.
"Well he also signed the American flag which is against flag code and extremely disrespectful. He thinks adding his name to something is some sort of endorsement from God," another wrote.
"No, I do not want you to sign the holy Torah," another commented.
Moreover, other users on X expressed frustration, suggesting that the former President might not have fully understood the cultural or religious significance of wearing a yarmulke or kippah—a traditional head covering worn by Jewish men to show reverence and humility before God.
"Just like he has no idea why he’s wearing a yarmulke," one said on X.
"He is seriously so out of touch with reality and that people still follow him is beyond me!" a netizen commented.
In addition, some X users sarcastically commented that bundling religious items commercially seems out of place, especially in a sacred or serious context. While some added that the former President takes every moment to self-promote.
"Would you like to package these w my Lee Greenwood Bible for $139.99?” one commented.
"It’s like he thinks every moment, no matter how solemn, is an opportunity for self-promotion," a netizen wrote on X.
"You want me to desecrate the Talmud?" another wrote.
"Oy, what an idiot !" a netizen commented.
As reactions continue to flood X and other social media platforms, neither the former President nor his team have responded to the viral clip as of yet.
Former President Trump visits Lubavitcher Rebbe’s gravesite to commemorate the October 7 attack
On Monday, former President Trump made his first visit to the gravesite of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Wearing his signature blue two-piece suit and a red tie, he notably donned a black kippah for the occasion.
According to Jewish Insider, Trump appeared at the tomb of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Ohel, where he prayed for the release of hostages held in Gaza. During the visit, he prayed while holding a holy book of Jewish, among other things.
Moreover, he was joined by several individuals, including Yael, Adi, and Roy Alexander, parents and brother of Edan Alexander—one of four American captives currently held by Hamas.
Further, Trump was joined by billionaire investor Howard Lutnick, Rabbi Levi Shemtov—the executive vice president of American Friends of Lubavitch, and conservative commentator Ben Shapiro. Referring to Edan Alexander, Trump suggested that he would bring him back to the United States.
"It’s gonna work out, we’re gonna make it work out, we’ve gotta get that guy back, right?" the former President noted.
The former President visited the Ohel on October 7, 2024, marking the first anniversary of the Hamas massacre and the ensuing of the Israel-Hamas conflict. Another significant reason to visit Lubavitcher Rebbe's grave is that the place holds a spiritual and religious significance among the Jewish community.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe's grave, known as the Ohel, is a place where many believers feel that prayers said at the gravesite are particularly powerful and may be more readily answered.
Trump's visit to the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s gravesite in Queens took place amid the backdrop of the upcoming presidential elections, scheduled for November 5, 2024.
