Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who were married for two years, have reached a divorce settlement after a prolonged battle for 8 years. James Simon, the attorney for the 49-year-old actress confirmed the news to AP on Monday, December 30.
The pair tied the knot in August 2014, and Angelina filed for divorce in September 2016, adducing "irreconcilable differences". She sought primary custody of their six children — Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne. Jolie's attorney James Simon said in a statement to People, referring to Angelina:
"She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over."
Angelina Jolie filed for the dissolution of her marriage to Brad Pitt after his alleged abusive behavior with her and the children on a private flight from France to Los Angeles. An investigation was held to look into Brad's alleged actions. However, no charges were pressed against him.
In early 2017, Angelina and Brad released a joint statement, informing the public that they had agreed to proceed with the divorce maintaining confidentiality. A private judge dealt with their divorce filing. According to their statement at the time:
"The parents are committed to act as a united front to effectuate recovery and reunification."
In April 2019, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were declared officially single by a judge. However, the two were yet to reach an agreement regarding their children's custody and division of assets.

Another major object of Angelina and Brad's divorce battle was Chateau Miraval Winery, the property they purchased in 2008. Angelina Jolie decided to sell her stakes in the winery in 2021. According to Hello Magazine, the Maleficent star penned an emotional message about Miraval in an email to Brad:
"It is now impossible to write this without crying."
She wrote Miraval was the place where they brought the twins — Vivienne and Knox after their birth. It was also where the former couple had their wedding ceremony "over a plaque" in Angelina Jolie's late mother's memory. The actress added:
"A place…where I thought I would grow old…. But it is also the place that marks the beginning of the end of our family."
Brad Pitt had agreed to buy her shares for $54.5 million, but on the condition that the actress wouldn't be allowed to discuss his behavior with the family outside of court. Angelina Jolie did not proceed with the deal and her stakes were later sold to Tenute del Mondo for $67 million.
Brad filed a lawsuit against the actress over the deal. He claimed the two had signed an initial agreement, which limited the couple from selling their shares without both of their approval.
Brad Pitt shortly received joint custody of their six children in May 2021, but the ruling was later nulled.
In 2022, NBC News obtained the FBI report on the 2016 plane incident that detailed Brad Pitt's alleged abuse. He reportedly grabbed Angelina Jolie by the head and shook her. In another cross-complaint obtained by the publication in the same year, Angelina accused the Troy actor of choking one of the children and hitting another one on the face.
While their battle over Miraval winery still continued, their daughter Zahara seemingly dropped Brad's last name 'Pitt' from her name. The then-18-year-old introduced herself as Zahara Marley Jolie at her sorority house Alpha Kappa Alpha after joining Spelman College in 2023.
In August 2024, Shiloh, the former couple's second eldest daughter legally dropped 'Pitt' from her name upon the court's approval. Angelina and Brad's youngest daughter Vivienne's name also did not have 'Pitt' in it on the credits of the Broadway musical The Outsiders.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have finally reached an agreement over a divorce that was filed a little over eight years ago. Details about the settlement have not been disclosed. However, there's uncertainty regarding their divorce settlement's direct effects on the winery lawsuit.
