As the first female presenter on Radio 1, DJ Annie Nightingale went on to become the station's longest-serving host. According to sources such as the BBC and The Guardian, on Friday, January 12, her family released a statement stating that she "passed away yesterday at her home in London after a short illness."

According to the same sources, they also stated,

“Never underestimate the role model she became. Breaking down doors by refusing to bow down to s*xual prejudice and male fear gave encouragement to generations of young women who, like Annie, only wanted to tell you about an amazing new tune they had heard."

After joining Radio 1 in 1970, Nightingale never left. For 12 years, she was the only female player on the channel. In addition, she holds the record for the longest career of any female radio presenter worldwide. She also spearheaded the movement and inspired other women to pursue careers as DJs and broadcasters. She further specialized in promoting new and underground music.

Before switching to an overnight role, Nightingale was the well-known presenter of Radio 1's Request Show in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. In addition, she occasionally hosted programs on Radio 2, 5 Live, and 6 Music. Apart from these, she also hosted a variety of documentaries.

The "biggest bass bangers" from the renowned dance music aficionado were featured on her show Annie Nightingale Presents. The music from her most recent program, which aired on January 9, included remixes of songs by US rapper Ice Spice, Jorja Smith, AJ Tracey, and Deadmau5.

She continued to host Annie Nightingale Presents until the end of the previous year. Another notable role for Nightingale was co-hosting The Old Grey Whistle Test, which was a music program on BBC Two.

The BBC further reported that talking about her death, Aled Haydn Jones, the current head of Radio 1, said in a statement,

“All of us at Radio 1 are devastated to lose Annie, our thoughts are with her family and friends. She was the first female DJ on Radio 1 and over her 50 years on the station was a pioneer for women in the industry and in dance music.”

He further stated,

"We have lost a broadcasting legend and, thanks to Annie, things will never be the same.”

Nightingale was hailed as "a uniquely gifted broadcaster who blessed us with her love of music and passion for journalism for over 50 years" by BBC Director General Tim Davie. She not only paved the way for new music but also championed female broadcasters, encouraging and supporting other women to pursue careers in the field.

Annie Nightingale had four children, namely Alex, Lucy, Olie, and Will. As per Rolling Stone, they all noted that her life will be commemorated at a memorial in the spring.
