Social media has been abuzz with reactions following an eyebrow-raising statement made by President Joe Biden during a conversation with the press.
On September 10, 2024, Biden told reporters that he would be heading to New York for his granddaughter's birthday and would do "9/11" after it.
"I’m going up to my granddaughter’s birthday in New York. Then we’re going to watch the debate and tomorrow I’m doing 9/11," Biden said.
The remark, made during a routine press conference, quickly went viral, with many users expressing disbelief and outrage over the gaffe on X. Memes, tweets, and posts flooded the internet, with users questioning how Joe Biden could still be addressing the media after referencing one of the most tragic events in U.S. history. One person on X wrote:
"how is he still allowed to talk to the media???"
Several other netizens expressed similar sentiments online.

Many users on X reacted to the viral video clip with disbelief, suggesting that Joe Biden may need care, while others commented that his PR team must be exhausted from constantly managing his media blunders.

The statement from Joe Biden came after he announced in July 2024 his decision to withdraw from the presidential re-election, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. Biden appeared to be referencing his participation in the solemn 9/11 remembrance ceremony, which this year marks the 23rd anniversary of the attacks.
As per the BBC, the 9/11 attack, which occurred on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, was a suicidal attack, and four planes were hijacked, which targeted key landmarks of the United States. Two planes crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, one hit the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers intervened.
As per BBC reports, 2,977 people were killed, marking it as one of the deadliest attacks in U.S. history and leading to significant global and political changes.
Where was Joe Biden at the time of the 9/11 attack in 2001?
At the time of the 9/11 attacks, Joe Biden, then chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was on a train from Wilmington to Washington at 8:35 a.m., as per CNN. Reportedly, he was on a call with his wife when a second plane hit the World Trade Center, and Biden reacted in disbelief.
"Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. Jill, what is it? Another plane … the other tower," Biden said.
In his memoir Promises to Keep: On Life and Politics, Biden described the whole scenario and mentioned that he messaged then-President George W. Bush about the incident.
In 2021, Joe Biden was elected as the 46th president of the United States. However, in July 2024, Biden, 81, announced his withdrawal from the presidential re-election race via a post on X. In the detailed statement, he indicated that his decision was made for the betterment of the party and expressed his commitment to fulfilling his presidential duties effectively for the remainder of his term.
"It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term," Biden wrote on X.
In a separate post, Biden endorsed current Vice President Kamala Harris to contend for the presidency in the November 2024 elections.
